Only in 1891 is her birth place given as Poole, probably an error by her son who was head of household. William is consistently shown as born in Poole except in 1901, when he is recorded as born in Little Puddle. FreeBMD suggests William (Edwin) was born in the Poole registration district, if he had been born in Puddletown, he would have more likely been registered in Dorchester. I would feel reasonably confident from the above that Martha was not born in Poole, but in Puddletown or Little Puddle. One possibility for the marriage of Martha to William Welch senior would be 1853 in Wareham District, if so her name may have been Ainsworth. Warehan district does include Bere Regis where William senior was born, but this could be a coincidence. In 1851 there is a Martha Ainsworth living in Bere Regis, though her birthplace is given as Stourpaine. I guess it is also possible that Ainsworth may not have been her maiden name, but her previous married name. I was hoping to find the marriage on the Dorset OPC, but no luck.
