I would also be interested in why families went to Hampshire - particularly Portsea/Portsmouth. I had ancestors on two lines who went from Poole in one case and Lytchett Matravers in another to Portsea. One lot then moved to Fawley - they were there by 1841 so it was presumably not the trains that took them. He was a stonemason. The other ancestor who went to Portsea was a ropemaker.
