It is now possible to search, free, an online index for men who enlisted in the army and eventually were pensioned. The index gives names, date of birth and place of birth. Access to the full record is charged for, but the free index on its own is a potential goldmine if one is looking for men who disappear from the census for a while. You can access the index online at: http://www.findmypast.co.uk/chelsea-pensioners-service-records-collection-search-start.action I've checked it myself and it has interesting EYERS names from Dorset - I'm sure it will have plenty of other Dorset interest.
