    3. Hello, I'm hoping that someone may be able to help finding where my great grandparents are buried. The information I have is from their death certificates and we haven't been able to find a headstone at either St. George's or St. John's. Humphrey Hinde born abt. 1836 Portland and died 7 Sep 1913 at the Workhouse Infirmary, Weymouth. Elizabeth Jane Hinde (nee Winter) born 30 Dec 1841 Portland and died 13 Feb 1935 1 Wyke Road, Weymouth, which I believe was the workhouse where Humphrey died. My second query is for any information about the death of Sarah Humphreys (nee Hinde). Sarah married Henry Geer Humphreys on 2 Nov 1892 at the Register's Office in Weymouth. Henry was born abt. 1859 in Westhampnett, Sussex. I've found 3 children of this union and they are: Henry Thomas Humphreys born abt 1893, Silvertown, London Dorothy Helen Humphreys born abt. 1896, Gosport, Hampshire Ernest Alfred Humphreys born abt. 1897, Gosport, Hampshire Any help would be most greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Richard Hinde Louisa, Virginia

    3. Hello Roy, Thank you for the reply and the information. I've only glanced at the 1911 census so far and that was mainly for the Hinde surname at the Isle of Portland. Genealogy is mostly a winter past time as the farm and my business takes up the spring, summer and fall. My cousins Roger and Margaret Hood in Codicote were just in Portland for a week with a 'distant' cousin from Australia. They spent time at the DRO and walking in the ancestors footsteps. Thank you once again for the information and I will pass this on to Roger and Margaret. Just as a side note Susan was born 15 Feb 1872 from her birth certificate. Good to hear from you again and hope you are doing well. 3. Dear Richard, Have you contacted the Weymouth & Portland Council? As it appears that they died in the workhouse, then they were probably buried in one of the public cemeteries (probably Wyke), rather than a churchyard. They probably wouldn't have a grave marker or headstone (as they were poor and there would not have been anyone to pay for it). Here are the details from the Weymouth & Portland Crematorium Office (where all records are kept) from their page of the website www.weymouth.gov.uk Contact us at Bereavement Services Weymouth Crematorium Quibo Lane Weymouth Dorset DT4 0RR Tel: 01305 786984 Fax: 01305 767804 Location The office of the Bereavement Services Division of the Weymouth and Portland Borough Council is located at the Weymouth Crematorium, Quibo Lane Weymouth. >From here the Council's four Cemeteries and the Crematorium are administered and any public enquires answered. A team of 7 administrative and operational staff, are available to assist the bereaved and Funeral Directors. We endeavour to offer the highest calibre service and our reputation for excellent compassionate service to the public enables us to go out of our way meeting the wishes of the bereaved. Cemeteries Bereavement Services provides burial facilities at four cemeteries: a.. Weymouth Cemetery, Abbotsbury Road, Weymouth. b.. Melcombe Regis Cemetery, Newstead Road, Weymouth. c.. Wyke Regis Cemetery, Wyke Regis, Weymouth. d.. Portland Cemetery, Weston Road, Portland. The oldest cemetery is the Melcombe Regis cemetery, which was opened in 1856. All the original registers for the above cemeteries are held at the Weymouth Crematorium office and can be inspected by appointment. If you explain that you are in USA, they may do a look up and confirm which cemetery (if any) and the plot numbers - they may even send you a map of the cemetery with the plots marked - you could then 'Google Earth' and view it from the air.
