The 1861 census indicates he was born in Charmouth. He married Mary FOLLETT on 10 August 1829 in Whitchurch Canonicorum. They appear on the 1841 census there with children Robert, Mary and James. I cannot locate the family in 1851, but daughter Mary was living in Winsham, Somerset with her mother's uncle William FOLLETT. In 1861 James and Mary were living in Whitchurch Canonicorum with sons Robert and James. (Daughter Mary had married William BROWN in 1855 in Bridport.) And that's where I've lost them. I do believe they had a daughter called Ann who was christened 29 May 1830 and died before 1841, and another son called James who was christened 24 January 1834 but died before 1838, the birthdate of the second son called James.
