It is spelled both ways in Nfld but it is the same family. My 3rd Great Grandfather ARTHUR DOWLING.DOWLAND may be the related to this man. Arthur was born around the 1820 & it said on his death record that he was born in England. My Dowling's/Dowland was from the South West Coast but probably lived all over the Island as they were Fishermen & Farmers. There is a lot of them in the old Hermitage records * Hiscock Point all on the South West Coast Burgeo & LaPoile District....
