Hi I am posting this message to both the Hampshire and Dorset lists because my families skirted the boundaries, and inevitably places, without moving an inch, found themselves in one county or another at different times over the centuries. I have just joined both lists so this is my 'hello'. I am researching: BAILEY family This line begins in Burcombe Wiltshire until James BAILEY b. abt 1842 Burcombe married Mary Ann BROWN of West Parley Dorset in 1867. By 1881 they were at Ringwood, he was a bricklayer. By 1901 he was a publican at West Moors. I have no date of death, nor any 1911 record of him. His son, Frank BAILEY was born 6 Sep 1871 Ashley, Ringwood and on 14 May 1894 at Verwood he married Anna Jane JACOBS (see family below). They had five children - Olive (1894), Elsie (1896), Ethel (1898), Frank (1900) and James (1908 - played cricket for Hampshire). Of these, Frank BAILEY was my grandfather. Frank senior (b. 1871) is listed in 1901 at Stoneham, New Forest as a Bricklayer and in 1911 he is at the Railway Hotel, West Moors as a Hotel Proprietor. I am not sure if this is the same establishment that his father was at in 1901 (above), though it would seem likely. JACOBS family: This line begins with Thomas JACOBS b. abt 1740 Hampreston who married Anne in Dorset in 1763. I have two sons for them - Edward JACOBS b. abt 1765 and Henry JACOBS b. abt 1771. I am following Edward's line. He married Mary EDNEY at Hampreston in 1787 and I have only one child for them - James JACOBS b. 11 Apr 1794 Woolsbridge, West Parley. I have James on the census from 1841 to 1871 inclusive, an ag lab all his life who died in1879. This James JACOBS (1794) married Mary Toms GALTON. I had a lot of trouble with her but recently discovered (through the wonderful Dorset OPC) that she may have been the first of five illegitimate children born to a Peggy GALTON and that Toms was her father's surname. I have eight children for James and Mary: Stephen (1815-1866), Mary Anne (1817), Joseph (1820-1875), Edmund (1820), Samuel (1826-1902), Mark (1827-1893), Martha (1832), Elisabeth (1837). Many of this branch worked as Railway Plate Layers - I am just reading up on the laying of the railways in this area. Of these children, Samuel JACOBS (1826-1902) is the line I am pursuing. He married Louisa WARLAND (b. 1833 Corfe Mullen - I had trouble with her until recently too as the marriage has her as Wayland). They had 13 children: Mary, William, Elizabeth, John, Joseph, Seth, Jesse, Walter, Edwin, Anna Jane, Frederick and Minnie, all born at Lions Hill and later Fern Down or West Moors. I am concerned with Anna Jane JACOBS (b. 1872 Fern Down Dorset) who married Frank BAILEY (above) at the Parish Church Verwood on 14 May 1894 and died 14 Mar 1955 Christchurch (district). Their children are listed in the BAILEY paragraph above. I'm sorry if that's a rather long introduction. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone who might be researching these families, particularly any cousins! I would also be grateful to anyone who could point me to suitable publications for learning about the geographical makeup of these areas, and also a good history of the Railway in that area. Also, does anyone know anything of the Railway Hotel at West Moors? Thanks in advance. Paula http://www.paula-bailey.com/restoration
Cheers and welcome I am guessing you have looked at this web site for Dorset? Dear Paula, Welcome to the list. I have no connections with this family, but live in West Parley, Ferndown. I was born in the area so know it extremely well. My son was a bellringer at Hampreston Church and my husbands ancestors come from the area also - living in and around most of the places you mentioned. At that time Ferndown wasn't the town it is today, but just an area of heath between West Parley / Dudsbury / Hampreston and West Moors. West Moors still came under the parish of West Parley, as did most of the area as it was all part of Lord & Lady Wimborne's estate. To answer your question regarding the Railway Hotel at West Moors: The Railway Hotel is still there (now known as the Tap & Railway, Station Road, West Moors) and if you Google Map - Street View, you can see it. The Railway was known as Catleman's Corkscrew and today is a footpath / cycleway known as the Castleman Trailway. It runs through the back of West Moors from Ringwood to Poole via Merley (just outside Wimborne and near Corfe Mullen). The original railway ran from Southampton across the New Forest via Brockenhurst, Holmsley and Ringwood to Hamworthy. There is quite a history to the railway and it's side branch from Ringwood to Christchurch via Hurn / Avon. I have a book called The Lost Railways of Dorset by Leslie Oppitz and published by Countryside Books of Newbury, Berks, (www.countrysidebooks.co.uk) which has a chapter on Catleman's Corkscrew including a photo looking down the line towards West Moors Station. If you are interested you can purchase it from them. There is also some history info on-line if you Google Castleman's Corkscrew or Southampton & Dorchester Railway (to give it it's correct title!). There is a second Inn at West Moors known as the Elephant & Castle, but I don't believe it is as old as The Railway. Looking at the 1901 census for West Moors, you are correct that it is the Railway Hotel that James BAILEY was publican of. It is next to the Railway Crossing Cottage (which is also still there today). Unfortunately the actual Station is no more and Pulman Court now stands on the spot where it was. Lions Hill (follow Lions Hill Way on Google maps) crossed the Railway between West Moors Station and Ashley (Heath) Halt. The platform at Ashley Halt is still there and is a good resting place when cycling the trailway. I now have to confess that I was partly responsible in the late 70s / early 80s (as a very young civil servant), for arranging the contracts for the removal of some of the rails etc from the original trackbed (but at least some of them went for use by Swanage Railway which is now running successfully from Corfe to Swanage). If you want to see what the area was like around 1900, then you could try http://www.old-maps.co.uk which will show you just how rural it was. I hope this helps, Regards Vanessa Dorset ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paula Bailey" <auntiep69@btinternet.com>, To: <HAMPSHIRE@rootsweb.com>; <DORSET@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 24, 2011 1:25 PM Subject: [DOR] JACOBS BAILEY Wimborne Bournemouth > Hi > > I am posting this message to both the Hampshire and Dorset lists > because my families skirted the boundaries, and inevitably places, > without moving an inch, found themselves in one county or another at > different times over the centuries.
