    3. This another one look at the date and it just arrived? 13 August 2018???? Jill -----Original Message----- From: Vanessa Marshall Sent: Monday, 13 August 2018 10:39 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [DOR] Re: Limpenny's in Devon Hello Mark, FMP has the marriage of Aaaron & Sarah transcribed: Aaron LEMPENNY (sic) Aged 40 Sarah BEBBINGS (sic) Aged 24 Groom's father's name: Robert LEMPENNY (sic) Bride's father's name: John BEBBINGS (sic) married on 1 May 1871 @ St Mary, Luddenham, Kent Original Source: Canterbury Cathedral Archive I note 3 errrors - groom's age and both surnames! I have attached a Seaman's Service Record for Aaron which quotes his dob as September 1827 and place as Exeter & also gives a description of him. Furthermore, in 1841 - I think Aaron, (noted as Laron & aged 15) & another sister Mary, (noted as aged 19) are residing with their brother Robert (noted as Rob, aged 26, an umbrella maker) & his wife Martha (noted as aged 27) at Fore Street, Allhallows on the Wall, Exeter. Robert LIMPENNY married Martha PALMER on 4 February 1837 @ St Mary Arches, Exeter. In 1851, there is a Robert LYMPENY (sic), noted as Robt, noted as aged 40 - but could be 60?, a pauper & an umbrella & parasol maker, noted as born Middlesex, London in the Exeter Workhouse With him is an Alfred LYMPENY (noted as Albond, aged 15, pauper son, born Exon - short for Exeter) . I can't find Robert (snr) or Alfred in 1841. Alfred moves to Nottingham, where in 1859 he marries Ann SMITH & raises a family. In 1861, there is a Robert LIMPENNY, (noted as aged 63, born Exeter), residing with his son Rueben born 1824, Exeter (& his family) in Camborne, Redruth, Cornwall Reuben is a Catholic Schoolmaster. If this is Aaron's father & brothers, they may have all been raised RC (so that might be why there doesn't appear to be any Cof E baptisms / burials for any of them?) (It was customary to marry in a bride's parish, so many RC men married in C of E churches) Robert LIMPENNY (snr) dies in Redruth in 1870, noted as aged 74 All this information is available from Ancestry / Find my past - but I've had to filter the searches by putting in wildcards (*) in Ancestry or ticking name variant boxes in FMP. You wouldn't believe how many ways LIMPENNY can be spelt - not to mention outright errors! I hope this helps, Vanessa Dorset On Sun, 12 Aug 2018 at 21:31, <[email protected]> wrote: > Hello, > Hope someone on here might be able to advise or help. > > I am researching a friends family history and the trail has lead us to > Devon. > > The LIMPENNY family appear to have had strong links in the Exeter area > and we are as far back as an Aaron Limpenny b.~1828 in Exeter, Devon. > He is outside of Devon from 1861 and the family was ultimately settled > in London but I am interested in the Devon ancestry. > > He married a Sarah Bibbings and I believe he had an older sister > called Elizabeth. > > Any help? > Best regards > Mark > > _______________________________________________ > *************************************** > > When replying to this message, please spare a thought for your fellow > list members, and anyone searching the archives in the future. 1. [DOR] George RICHARDS Puddletown 1181
    2. Hi I have had a request from a person in USA who wishes to know if a certain person appears in the Puddletown 1881 census, as he wishes to establish that George RICHARDS sailed for America before that date. He was in Front Street, Piddletown in 1861 with wife Sarah and 2 children, Ann and Jane His DOB ab 1830. Born Hilton (?) I used to have the CDs for 1881 but they seem to have gone out of date. They are in King's Arms Street in 1871 census with more family members. He also wants to know the approximate position of Front Street and King's Arms Street. I don't think they are still there now. I'm sure someone told me that Front Street was parallel to Orford Street at one time. He intends to visit in April. Your assistance will be much appreciated. He can't understand why George, being a postman, took off for America - but he had an older brother James who seems to have had a cotton plantation in Mississippi. He cannot conceive why anyone would want to go to Satartia ,Mississipi at that time, as it was pretty wild. But I suppose we are looking at the American Dream versus British Industrial Revolution here, rather than any sort of scandal or other motive. Kind regards Glenda

    3. I have a query about a place called Shidderton, Dorset. Records from the Church of England Burial Records of 1831 – 1841 in Newfoundland show a James COLLINS – no age, buried Oct. 16, 1823 as being from Shidderton, Dorset. I cannot find a place called Shidderton in Dorset and am wondering if that was a typographical error or it was just very difficult for the person doing the transcribing to read. 3. Hello again Mark, I have just found a baptism for Robert LIMPENNY (jnr) on Family Search Robert LYMPANY (sic) s/o Robert & Mary baptised on 23 March 1817 @ St Mary Steps, Exeter. Also you might be interested in the following articles from The British Newspaper Archives via FMP: As noted in the Perry's Bankrupt & Insolvent Gazette - at 10am on 27 July 1832 at the Exeter City Court House, Robert LIMPENNY, umbrella maker of South Street, Exeter filed for bankruptcy. However he must have been back making umbrellas by 1839 as there is the following death notice: The Western Times Exeter - 4 May 1839 April 27th in giving birth to their 22nd child, the wife of Robert LIMPENNY, umbrella maker of Fore Street Hill. The same report is repeated in The Bristol Mercury dated 11 May 1839. Yes - it does say 22nd child!! There is a death registration: Mary Ann Frances LIMPENNY - Jun 1/4 1939 Exeter - GRO Ref: 10 - 59. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear on the new search facility on the GRO website, so I can't check her age at death to see if this is her or not - but does look likely. From 1842 to 1849 there are a series of adverts such as this in The Western Times, Exeter. [image: image.png] Unfortunately, I haven't found a marriage for Robert & Mary or any other baptisms for their children.
