Author: portunus Surnames: Pitt Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.dor.general/6181.1.2.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks so much Lynne (and to Vanessa!) for your help. Developing a list of the Sturminster Pitts as well as any from Pimperne will help immensely. I'm in contact with someone from the Dorset History Center who is researching the earlier parish records for me but didn't want to duplicate work that may have already been done. The wills you listed, Lynne, I recently got from DHC... it was the will of John, Vicar of Sturminster Newton, whose will was probated in 1741, where I found my Charles and his sister Bridget. Turns out they had siblings Betty, George, and a sister Mary who married Jethro Lambert. John was vicar of Sturminster Newton from 1705-1732 and his son George was baptised there in 1712 but the other kids weren't. Before 1705, John was the vicar at Hilton from 1689-1705 so his other kids were probably baptised there. John is listed in Alum. Oxon. as son of William of Pimperne so the earlier parish records of Pimperne, Sturminster, and Hilton are vital. Thanks so muc! h for your help! The Pimperne baptisms 1559 - 1837 have been done. In total there are 132 PITT baptisms from Dorset listed on FMP, but I couldn't find anything on your Charles, John or William. Not all parishes are on-line yet and the last update was in November 2009. 3. Hi Folks, I have a huge vote of thanks for both Vanessa Marshall and Glenys Jenningsl, who have researched the family of my James Richard Roper, in the 1911 census and thereafter. Thanks to them, I am now able to document this family well into the 20th century. I would like to curtail all future work on this enquiry of mine by List researchers. Best wishes. If so, were they all checked for Pitt entries? I recently found my ancestor Charles Pitt's father's will, John Pitt vicar of Sturminster Newton, who died about 1732-1741. His wife's name was Mary. According to Alumni Oxonienses, John went to Exeter College in 1682, was born about 1664, and was the son of William of Pimperne. I'm pretty sure most of the Pitts from Sturminster Newton and Pimperne are descended from one of 3 Christopher Pitts in the area then. Is it possible there are more Pitts in the early Pimperne parish registers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 2. Vanessa Marshall
    3. Hi Christel, Hope you are keeping well. I think I may be letting you down this time - I haven't been able to find a baptism for a Hester / Esther Knight which would fit. The only thing I could find was a baptism of 'A Daughter' to William & Mary KNIGHT on 16 October 1796 at Trent, Dorset (on the border with Somerset). But as Trent is 19 miles from Burton Bradstock, I think this is an unlikely match for your lady. I'm not sure she was the daughter of William & Edith KNIGHT either as they seemed very dilligent in having all 12 of their children baptised at Burton Bradstock (however it is just possible - especially if Edith was already pregnant when she married in Jan 1795 that Esther was born in 1795 - but certainly not after as all the children seem evenly spaced and it would be difficult to fit another child in the list: William - May 1796 Elizabeth - April 1798 Matthew - Jan 1800 Thomas - Nov 1801 Ann - Jan 1804 James - Feb 1805 Sarah - Aug 1808 Jane - May 1810 Mary Ann - May 1812 Anna - Sep 1813 John - May 1815 Robert - May 1815 I also checked surrounding parishes, in case Edith came from an outside parish and had her baptised there - but to no avail. The only other idea I had (a long shot) is that Esther is actually Elizabeth above? 3. Dear Norma, If you Google Maps for Evershot, Dorset & zoom in, you will see that the church is on the corner of Fore Street and Back Lane, both old roads. There doesn't appear to be any sign of Church Yard. What was his occupation? - it wasn't unheard of for someone to be living in a dwelling which was actually in or on the edge of the churchyard (i.e graveyard)!! Otherwise he may have been living in the lovely thatched cottages which are next to the church in Fore Street as they abut the church yard or if you look up back lane behind the church there are also some cottages at the far end of the graveyard. Again on Google Maps place the little orange man in front of these cottages to get the street veiw and by using your arrow keys you will be able to move along the roads and view the streets as they looked earlier this year. P. Boord" to my great grandfather's elder brother "The Rev. Joseph Boord Ansted." In the letter he tells "JB Ansted" that he is 12th in descent from Sir John Hody "through your Boord descent from the Bonds of Lutton C. Dorset." I would be extremely interested in learning more about the Boord's and Bonds and of course about the line of descent from Sir John. Thank you in advance for any information that you can share.
