    1. [DOR] Hope Square
    2. Sue Irvine
    3. Hi, My grandfather, Edward Gill, and his family are shown on the 1911 census as living at 1 Hope Square, Weymouth. As a child in the 1950s I remember there just being a small, triangular piece of land where number 1 Hope Square would have been. My father told me that one of his sister's accidentally burned down the house by knocking over a lighted candle in her bedroom. However I think this story is probably just family legend! Would anyone on the list with an interest in local history know what actually did happen to 1 Hope Square ? Many thanks, Sue Irvine

    3. I realize the following question isnt Dorset, but if SKS could reply off list The only information I have regarding a paternal grandparent origins is her father and mother were in London, and she was born there. Is there a way to access census records for 1851 & 1861 for London? Search parish records? Is London associated with any particular county? Thank you Don Chinnery Sun City Center FL USA

    3. I just viewed the detailed Ordnance survey map for Hope Square/Cove Street and it does show number 2 and 3 Hope Square to the left of the Red Lion. Number one would be that small triangle. The width of the harbor end of the triangle is about the same width as house number 2. If there were a house on that plot, then Cove street would have a slightly different line. In fact, it does seem that the street, which is straight from the harbor to 5 Cove Street jogs slightly to the left. If it didn't, then there is enough room for 1 Hope Square. 3. Interesting location. My great granduncle, Joseph Jacob Hebley lived in Cove Street about that time. The small triangle you are referring to is in fact pretty much in Cove street next to the Red Lion pub. Number 3 Hope Square is a bistro although the number on the door is 2 Hope Square. You can see what I mean in this photo. www.weymouth-pictures.co.uk/dor/wey/har/pic_hsq12.htm One note on this web site www.weymouth-dorset.co.uk/hope.html indicates that the numbers in Hope Street were reversed at some time. Don't know what date that may have happened, but that could cause problems. My ggg grandfather, Joseph Lucas on census returns shows his place of birth (about 1802) as Corfe Castle Dorset. The only Joseph Lucas I can find on IGI born about this time in Dorset is Joseph Legge Lucas baptised Alfpuddle Dorset in 1802. I don't think this is anywhere near Corfe Castle and I've not seen Legge in his name, so I'm assuming he's not mine. I wondered if anyone with access to Baptism records for Corfe Castle (or possibly Church Knowle) in Dorset could look to see whether there is a baptism of a Joseph Lucas. My Joseph Lucas married Mary Ann Bennett in 1832. Their children were Maria, Elizabeth, Sarah, William, John and Joseph Lucas. On a more general note, can anyone tell me how I can find out which parishes have records on IGI? Any assistance appreciated Lyn Sydney Aust *************************************** When replying to this message, please spare a thought for your fellow list members, and anyone searching the archives in the future. 1. [DOR] Sunderland Jugs in Dorset
    2. Wyn
    3. Hi Back on this list after a long break. I am looking for help to solve a problem that has occurred within my Family History. Two Sunderland Lustre ware Jugs have recently appeared in an auction in Dorset inscribed with the names of my Great, Great Grandparents Sarah Payne and Bernard Berry from Chideock, Dorset - both dated in the 19th century. I have so far been unable to find a link for the Payne or Berry family with the North East and am wondering if anybody on this list is researching the Payne family and can give me any information A visit to the "Dur-Sunderland List" came up with.... There was a considerable trade by Sunderland Potteries in the sale of "Gift China" to sailors plying between ports. Pottery was frequently made for presentation purposes, to commemorate birthdays, baptisms, weddings, etc. It could be that someone ordered the jugs as a gift for your great, great grandparents My only sailor (so far) in the Payne family was my great grandfather who was born after the date on the second jug, the rest all appear to be farmers and farm workers. Any help with this would be very much appreciated Wyn Burgess

    2. Mailing Lists
    3. Apologies if this has been published before. There are a number of Dorset Parish Transcripts (and other Counties) available on the Internet Archive site which listers may find useful. The following will find some of the Dorset documents: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=the%20parish%20registers%20of%20Engl and%20and%20dorset to get the rest of the counties remove the '%20and%20dorset' from the above. There is also one for Stourpaine (not caught by the above): http://www.archive.org/stream/dorsetrecords06frye/dorsetrecords06frye_djvu.t xt the 'read online' versions can be a bit suspect as I think they are digitised from the text and have some character problems but there should also be available PDF versions which are the real images and can be downloaded. This is a vast repository and it may be worth playing around with the search to see if there is anything of interest. Bob Hills

    1. [DOR] Barnabas/Barnard MABEY of Milton Abbas
    2. Sandra J Smith
    3. After nearly 40 years of searching I think I may have finally identified my William MABEY who moved to Hampshire, married there in 1721 and left literally hundreds of descendants in the Southampton/New Forest/Romsey area. Because of the prolific number of Mabey's in Dorset, I have always considered that he was originally a Dorset man. One of William's children was named Barnard and William did spend some time in Swanage where another Barnard was married. I had always considered that this might have been a brother. I have now discovered that a Barnabas/Barnard Mabey was having children in Milton Abbas 1695-1707, one of whom was Barnabas and another Willes. Their other son Henry appears to be the only one who remained in the village. My questions are: has anyone done any research on this particular branch of the Mabey family? Does anyone have any information about the original village of Barnabas/Barnard Mabey - he wasnt born in Milton Abbas. Kind regards Sandra

    2. Darren Wheatley
    3. Hi, I'm descended from Eli BRIDLE (born about 1812 in Halstock) and Matilda CLEAL (b. about 1816 in Chedington). They married in Fordington, Dorchester in 1846 and eventually ended up in Swindon, Wiltshire. Their son Emmanuel BRIDLE (born 1847 in Dorchester) married Sarah Elizabeth GALLAGHER (born about 1866, most probably in Yeovil) in 1888 in Swindon, Wiltshire. I believe that the BRIDLE / GALLAGHER line could be a gypsy / traveller family. If anyone has any links to these families or has any information on BRIDLE, GALLAGHER or CLEAL in these parts of Dorset, or even anything on gypsy / traveller families in Dorset please drop me a line. Regards Darren.

This takes the precautionary view that anyone born less than 100 years ago may still be living, and may not want their details put into the public domain. It is unlikely that the parents of the above will be living, but children and siblings may well be, so if in doubt, reply to Gina OFF-LIST at wienna@xtra.co.nz. 3. Hi Christel I don't have this verified at source, but I believe Ann Pelly and Benjamin Downton were married 20 April 1809 in Nether Compton. Unfortunately Nether Compton marriages are not online as far as I know, so would need to be verified in the PRs at Dorchester. I also concur that Ann's parents were John Pelly and Abigail Hillier but like you I have not been able to find their marriage. Benjamin Downton was the youngest son of my 6*Great Grandparents William Downton and Sarah Warren of Glanvilles Wootton. You can find the details I do have on my web site at www.vectisjon.com/familyhistory/ It would be good to have the Nether Compton marriage confirmed.
