Ancestry saying Tonbridge is in Dorset seems to be a mistake on this site, Tonbridge is definitely in Kent. Can I ask, how did you find Peters parents? I was looking all day on here and couldn't find the information. Did it say the ages of Leonard & Alice? Thank you again Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello list members and especially Vanessa, ` I'm looking for parish records of Stourton Caundle for 1871. I have a note sent to me a long time ago saying that a friend had seen baptisms recorded for both an Eliza and a Richard Winter on 13 August 1871, the parents were Richard (groom) and Mary. They thought these children were twins but the FreeBMD does not show the two names as such. There are possible registrations for Richard in 1869 and Eliza in 1871. I know families often had more than one child baptised at a time. The LDS film for that parish is only the bishop's transcript and does not include the year of 1871. Would like to know which Family History Center has the original register and how can I get a check of the original records? I don't know what Record Office they visited. Peter Charles Vanstone born 1946 was in Tonbridge, which is not Dorset, so have we got the right man? I think Tonbridge might be Kent? I think I found a potential sister for Peter, born in Tonbridge, but she could still be alive so I will not post details. does this help? Hello Listers I am researching the circumstances of the death of Joseph Redvers READ who died on the 1 September 1947 in Verwood when a tree he was attempting to cut down fell on him and crushed him to death. He is buried in Marnhull Church I expect that there may be an article abt this in the local papers in either Marnhull or Verwood. If sks has access to the library for that area I would appreciate a lookup around that date for any mention of this death. Regards John Manchester
I have done considerable research on the Mabeys in Dorset, particularly, some descendants of Jonathan Mabey, born in 1696 in Maiden Newton and who married Rebecca ?. As far as I can tell, he was the son of John Mabey, who died in 1708 in Maiden Newton and was also the brother of Bernard Mabey, born 1688 in Maiden Newton.
snip > In the early 1800's was Axminster in Devon or Dorset? Hi Derek Axminster has always been in Devon, however Stockland ad Dalwood to the west and Hawkchurch to the east were in Dorset and Devon respectively but switched counties along with some other parishes during rationalisation starting in the 1840s. Axminster R D then and now would therefore cover both Devon and parts of Dorset Eddie
Hi Everyone, In the early 1800's was Axminster in Devon or Dorset? Best Wishes, Derek
Dear Marian, Charles HYDE's (& his siblings) baptisms are on the Dorset OPC site: www.opcdorset.org Alll the baptisms & marriages for Sherborne parish church have been transcribed. Charles s/o James & Betty HYDE baptised 9 July 1785 @ Sherborne Parish Church. James' (& sibling) are also there - but I'll let you search for them. (Some of the G Grandmother's baptisms are also listed as are some of the marriages.) Assuming you mean the famous Sherborne School in Abbey Road, you could contact the Dorset History Centre to see if any of the papers that they hold on Sherborne School might tell you when Mary Ann began working there - you can search their catalogue on their website at www.dorsetforyou.com/archives (or you could contact the school direct to see whether they are still holding any archives for that period). However, if she was the nursemaid for the headmaster's (or a junior master's) family, then she would have probably beeen employed directly by them & not the school board. I have recently rejoined the list as my Uncle - a Hyde - has now become more interested in his family history. I am trying to see if I can take his family any further back than I already have plus any more information about his Mother who was living in Sherborne in 1911. Frederick Octavius HYDE (born 1888 in Sherborne but have no Baptism date) married Mary Ann WILSON (who was born in Hull in 1894) on Christmas Day 1913 at Sherborne. Mary Ann was a Nursery maid living at Sherborne School House on the 1911 census. Is there any way that I can find out when she started work there? In 1901 she was a 'Waif' living in Wales and wonder how she came to be living in Sherborne ten years later Fredericks parents were Henry & Susan Sophia JEANES and I know they had 6 other children most of whom I have traced but not all of their descendants. The generations before that are Thomas HYDE 1817 & Jane HUNT and Charles HYDE 1785 & Elizabeth GUY Hope someone is able to help me further Best wishes Marian Scott

They are a mystery really. Just odd that she says she's from Godmanstone and is married there with a witness who is clearly a relative and yet I can't find a Russel there at any time. Given her father is (or so she says) a Shepherd, I know Shepherds sometime had to travel about the county due to work so maybe it was just easier for her to say to census people she came from Godmanstone, where she married her husband, as this was the place she felt of as home even if maybe she wasn't born there after all. I may just be being a bit fanciful I suppose. I've tried on Family Search but no one stands out there either. Not sure if the Godmanstone records have been transcribed on there though, or if so how completely. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
