Dear Ellen, I cannot help you but I am researching the Bartlett line and could use your help. My earliest known ancestor is Richard Bartlett who was born in Dorset in 1575 and immigrated to America in 1635. I am searching for family members that he left behind in England. Have any of your Bartlett relatives had their DNA tested that we could compare with our own? Or do you have any family lore suggesting that some of your ancestors immigrated to America? Any information would be much appreciated. Barbara

Hello i am trying to find out more information about the parents and brothers and sisters of my 3 x Grandmother Susanna Bartlett who married a Matthew Symes at Burstock Dorset. From the death certificate i worked out that she must have been born around 1784 at st Mary's Church Bridport Dorset, Dorset the daughter of Samuel and Mary Bartlett. Is anyone researching this line or can anybody help. thank you kind regards ellen delaney
Dear Joan, Just so you don't get confused - from Lynnes excellant e-mail, the Mary WINTER buried at Dorchester 1869 is not Richard's wife - see my notes already sent. Mary WINTER died in 1888 (and is on both 1871 & 1881 census' as a widow). Hello Joan, It was quite common for families to have multiple baptisms - either siblings or cousins. With regard to BMD registrations: If Eliza & Richard were twins, then they would be registered together and have either the same GRO References or consecutive ones, (if the Registrar had to begin a new page for the 2nd child). As Stourton Caundle is in Sturminster District, I don't think that Richard WINTER registered 1869 Weymouth is correct. There appears to be another family of WINTERs at Portland to which he belongs (see census'). FreeBMD has both Eliza & Richard WINTER births registered together in 1854 Sturminster District, (with consecutive references), but he appears to die in the same year. To answer your question on Dorset parish records: The original parish records for Stourton Caundle (1670 - 1881) are held at Dorset History Centre in Dorchester- see www.dorsetforyou.com/archives I'm assuming that the later records are still with the incumbent minister for the parish. The LDS only filmed Bishop's Transcripts which were a copy of the registers sent to the Bishop by the vicar each year - (they often have entries missing as it depended on how diligent the vicar was at his record keeping and copying them out). The LDS do not have access to the original records held at Dorchester. The only way to check the originals is if SKS (some kind soul) goes and does a look up or you pay for them to search (ouch!!) I'm sorry but I live too far away and I work, so don't have the time to do it for you - (If I'm lucky, I only manage to get to Dorchester about twice a year for my own research.) For your info: Richard WINTER married Mary LEMON Sep 1/4 1840 Shaftesbury District GRO Ref: 8 - 143 Elizabeth Lemon WINTER baptised 6 December 1840 @ Holwell by Sherborne - Parents Richard & Mary WINTER - Labourer James WINTER baptised 4 June 1843 @ Holwell by Sherborne - Parents Richard & Mary WINTER - Labourer Keziah WINTER baptised 16 June 1846 @ Holwell by Sherborne - Parents Richard & Mary WINTER - Labourer (privately baptised) (Info BIVRI & Dorset OPC) They then appeared to have moved 2.5 miles along the road to Stourton as they are on the 1851 census there, but no Elizabeth. Mary Anne WINTER baptised 14 December 1851 @ Stourton Caundle - Parents Richard & Mary WINTER Edwin Richard WINTER baptised 3 May 1857 @ Stourton Caundle - Parents Richard & Mary WINTER (Info BIVRI) In 1861 they are still at Stourton (& Elizabeth is back with them, but no Keziah). They have an Eliza (b1854 - see above) with them also. There are other WINTER baptisms listed at Stourton Caundle up to 1878 on the BIVRI, but no more to Richard & Mary. However the BIVRI is not complete, so checking the original records would be only way of being certain. In 1873 Eliza has an illegitimate daughter - Agnes Mary Batten WINTER baptised at Holwell (I think Batten is the father's name as Eliza & Emmanuel BATTEN are witnesses at a wedding in Holwell in 1872 - maybe they got a little bit too drunk?) Also from FreeBMD it appears that Richard WINTER (snr) died in 1869 (aged 53) - being registered in Sherborne District ( he is buried at Hollwell, where he was baptised in 1816). If that is him, then he couldn't have fathered children in 1871. Mary appears on the 1871 census as a widow (& a servant at the Rectory in Stock Gaylard). In 1881 Mary (with Keziah, Edwin & Grandaughter Agnes) are in Sherborne. (The enumerator has made a right mess-up, Keziah is down as Mary's wife & Agnes aged 8 her daughter. I don't think so at 66!!) Mary's death is registered on FreeBMD in 1888 Sherborne District (aged 71). I hope this info helps & you are successful in your searches, Regards as always, Vanessa Dorset ----- Original Message ----- From: <JWint39798@aol.com> To: <dorset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 29, 2010 1:30 AM Subject: [DOR] Stourton Caundle Parish Records > Hello list members and especially Vanessa, > > ` I'm looking for parish records of Stourton Caundle for 1871.
