Dear John, Hope you are keeping well & working hard on restoring your motorbike (besides doing your family history). I thought I would give you some information on our local newspapers: Verwood, although it is in Dorset, lies close to the county borders of Wiltshire & Hants, so there are quite a few local papers which may have covered the incident. Dorset papers which may have details: The most likely paper to have covered the death would be the Dorset Evening Echo (Now the Dorset Daily Echo), (1921 - ) Microfilm of editions 1921 - 2003 are held at the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester. Other newspapers which may have covered the incident are: Bournemouth Evening Echo (now the Daily Echo) - (1900 - ). Eventhough it was printed in Bournemouth, it covered incidents as far as Wimborne / Verwood. The files of issues 1920 - 1966 were held at Springbourne Library in Bournemouth in 1984 - if they are still there! (Please note: this is NOT the main Bournemouth Library), also the Bournemouth Echo Offices have their own library and hold a complete set. You can contact them - Bournemouth Echo Library: Tel: 01202 411244 E-mail: library@bournemouthecho.co.uk Some early editions (but I'm not sure to what date) have been microfilmed for the BLNL (British Library Newspaper Library) at Collindale, London. Dorset History Centre does NOT have copies or film of these) There is also the Bournemouth Times - (1919 - 1983), which were also held in Springbourne Library, Bournemouth in 1984 (again I'm not sure if they are still there). Only those from 1965 onwards have been microfilmed and are at BLNL. Otherwise the Dorset County Chronicle (1823 - 1957) may have some details. Copies have been microfilmed and are held at The Dorset History Centre, Dorchester. Generally Bournemouth & Dorset Local Libraries only hold the latest copies of local papers, not back issues.. So unfortunately, it isn't an easy thing to look up old local newspapers in Dorset! Salisbury newspapers: It's also possible that the incident was covered by the Salisbury papers as Verwood is only about 12 miles from Salisbury. Salisbury Journal (1736 - ) Copies are held at Salisbury Public Library and the offices of Salisbury Times & Journal in Salisbury. Salisbury Times (1868 - 1982) These are held at the Salisbury Times & Journal offices. I'm not sure if any local Ringwood newspapers were published which may have covered the story. (Ringwood is the nearest town to Verwood, about 5 miles). Having said all this - I am hoping to go to Springbourne Library in the next couple of weeks to see if the the Bournemouth Evening Echo & Bournemouth Times newspapers are still there, and if they are to lookup an incident in my husband's tree, so I have made a note and will see if there is anything about John Redvers READ for you also. Unfortunately, I am unable to get to Dorset History Centre to check on the Dorset Evening Echo & the Dorset Chronicle - maybe another kind soul could do these for you? Best wishes as always, Vanessa Dorset ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gensearcher" <gensearcher@sky.com> To: "Dorset Email List" <DORSET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 28, 2010 5:01 PM Subject: [DOR] Death of Joseph Redvers READ died 1 Sept 1947 > Hello Listers > I am researching the circumstances of the death of Joseph Redvers READ who > died on the 1 September 1947 in Verwood when a tree he was attempting to > cut > down fell on him and crushed him to death.
