    1. [DOR] children of David and Jane LEGG
    2. Christel Muncaster
    3. Hi it's only since sending my first mail and feeling able to move on that I've discovered several of David and Jane's children were baptised in 1859. I am having all sorts of issues with children and matching them to censuses. I think I will stop and come back to it later. Christel

    1. [DOR] Ann Eliza LEGG c 1858/9
    2. Christel Muncaster
    3. Dear All here is my newest stupid question (seriously stupid) I have a Cecil Helier LEGG in 1881 census as a grandson of David LEGG and Jane (nee HANSFORD). His baptism record gives his mother as Ann Eliza LEGG. Ann LEGG is on the 1881 census -- however, I think this is actually her older sister Jane (the image is very faint) as the year of birth is 10 years off -- the baptism I found for Ann Eliza puts her year of birth as 1859. It says she is born in Burton Bradstock (parents David and Jane) but I cannot find a birth record that appears to fit. Also, I cannot place Ann Eliza with David & Jane in 1861 or 1871 (possibly not even 1881, as mentioned above). By some weird chance I already have an Ann Eliza LEGG c 1858 (but born Wootton Glanville -- where I cannot find a baptism) in my tree, in 1861 she is the "daughter" of Oliver JEANES and his wife Matilda KNELL (married 1852). She has always puzzled me. I assumed she was Oliver's child from an affair/fling but that Matilda agreed to take her on, having had no children of her own -- however she is not with them subsequently. I have no idea how both these "Ann Eliza"s could be the same, but then neither of them seem to be who they are or where they should be ... Is there any chance of enlightenment? Christel

Hi Listers, I think that some researchers would be interested in the following book, which gives details of Dorset men charged and committed after the 1830 riots ( some transported to Australia ). It is called Dorset Machine Breakers written by Jill Chambers ----- ISBN 1-903049-02-4. I found it a fascinating read.                        Snowy

Hi Vanessa, Personal property, makes it sound as if it had to be something on the person, in fact it meant any property that had an owner, but not intangible things, like rights of way , or wild things. He would have become a Felon after the conviction. The Larceny Act of 1911 was repealed by the Theft Act in 1968, so today we would call it Theft. He may not have been a naughty boy, it could have been as little as an apple. Regards Trevor

    3. Dear Becki, It means that this time he was convicted for Larceny (theft of personal property) and he had a previous conviction for Felony (this is a term which was used for a more serious crime such as Murder, Rape, Wounding, Arson or Robbery). Unfortunately it doesn't indicate exactly which crime was committed. The courts certainly took previous convictions into account. Naughty Boy!! He was the son of Thomas Roy b.1880 in Glasgow & Elizabeth Miller b.1885 in Glasgow. This couple were married in 1908 in Glasgow. They had at least 3 or 4 sons (Thomas, William, Andrew to be sure). Thomas married Win (possibly Winifred) and moved to the Dorset area living in Charlton Marshall. I know they had a daughter and grandson named Alex. Brother William ended in the Aberdeen area and brother Andrew married and moved to South Africa. Author: vanessamarshall Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.dor.general/6232.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Shelley, To answer your question - no, not all records pre 1837 are on Ancestry. Ancestry is limited in pre 1837 records. The free site Dorset OPC have details of marriages 1556 - 1812 for Maiden Newton. See www.opcdorset.org FreeREG has some early marriages, but not baptisms or burials listed for Maiden Newton. See www.freereg.org.uk Have you checked http://search.labs.familysearch.org (This is not the main site, but a pilot site which covers some of the details on the BIVRI (British Isles Vital Record Index) There is also the IGI (International Geneaology Index)searchable on www.familysearch.org (But beware - many entries are 'submitted' without any checking and are unreliable to say the least - only accept an entry if at the bottom it says 'Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record' This means that the details were taken from the Bishop's Transcripts for the parish (The BTs were a copy of the register which were sent to the Bishop, The church of LDS microfilmed them for use as a Geneology Index. Finally: You could try Find my Past (a fee paying site like Ancestry)which has 390 baptisms covering 1774 - 1881, 78 marriages 1815 - 1837 and 270 Burials 1813 - 1817 for Maiden Newton listed. But my question is - If you have details from Dorset History Centre why are you looking them up on-line? The first rule of Family History is to always try to check & use the original records, which in this case are those at DHC.
