    3. Many thanks. It is exactly what I want. Joseph is much later than I am studying at the moment - but I will get there eventually!! Kind regards Maddy -----Original Message----- From: dorset-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:dorset-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ann Brown Sent: 08 September 2010 14:38 To: dorset@rootsweb.com Subject: [DOR] Transported to Australia from Dorset Hi Maddy Hope you don't mind but the quickest way of giving you the information about Joseph Wheeler Feltham was to send you a chunk from some information I prepared for my husband's family. It follows. Shows at least that some of the "convict" made good. "It has come to light that this Joseph was transported to Tasmania in 1852, with a sentence of ten years. He had been found guilty of housebreaking and stealing seven silver spoons and a pair of shoes. In the course of our researches we have been contacted by his great great grandson. He tells us that Joseph was a " Parkhurst Boy" for a period and was trained in that prison as a baker before being put on a ship and transported to Tasmania. He was able to obtain a pardon there after a relatively short period. An e-mail from another person, presumably a relative, (though she never spelt it out), provided this detailed information: "Joseph Wheeler (Feltham) was Elizabeth Jane's brother and was tried at Dorchester Assizes 13 March 1850 10 yrs transportation for burglary - prison report- single, stated housebreaking, taking seven silver spoons & shoes for housebreaking Discharged 13 April 1850 - Moved to Millbank, London (L15) Arrived in Hobart, Tasmania 16 Dec 1852 on the ship Equestrian - C of E Can Read & Write He served 4 years 11 months DESCRIPTION: Trade: Baker Height: 5'3" Age: 20 Complexion: Fair Head: Med Whiskers: None Visage: Oval Forehead: High Eyebrows: Light Eyes: Grey Nose: Med Mouth: Small Chin: Med Native Place: Near Wimborne Marks: Scar on forehead CONVICT HISTORY 20 Dec 1852 T Brown, Liverpool St., Hobart 18Oct 1853 Muster - - - Hobart 2 May 1854 Already - - that is - - (only) two year from arrival (eligible) for Conditional Pardon 16 Jan 1855 Conditional Pardon (granted) 15 Mar 1864 Hobart/ Stealing wood - one weeks hard labour"" A subsequent e-mail from his great great grandson in Australia said that Joseph did very well in Hobart, Tasmania. He married, owned a house in Ware Street in Hobart Town in 1868 and lived there for the rest of his life, until his death in 1918. In fact he went on to own most of the street. The street was renamed Feltham Street in 1939. I also had information from a gentleman called Tony Cocks, who had done, I think, a PhD thesis on convicts and what became of them - by chance one of them was Joseph Wheeler Feltham. Hope this is what you wanted. 3. I would like to thank Harvey for the steer towards Maiden Newton. My brother has since been to the Dorset Archives and extracted all the Mabey (plus variants) references in the parish registers. The fact that the family seem to disperse after 1709 when both parents died within a week of each other, that the father was a miller by trade and there is a brother called Bernard, makes me 99% certain this this correct family. Now I have to find John and Mary's marriage and John's baptism. Thank you Harvey. It might even show where they both came from ? I had no luck with the birth record for him in England or Wales, but there was a war on when they married and so there is no guarantee that he was from Dorset ? Unless you have other information on his origins? Other alternative is to try to find the son, who married in Dorset in 1978 and could still be around? good hunting Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi Robyn, I have not come across James yet. I have been transcribing some prison registers (Dorchester) for the past few years but have only reached 1820. Having said that I have done some work on the Swing Riots and the perpetrators were tried and transported in 1830 but Tanswell was not amongst them. I will keep an eye out for him and let you know if/when I find anything more. 3. Hi Linda Thanks for trying to put me straight! this is the third time I have tried to make sense of this bit of tree, there is always something to trip me up -- I will get there eventually: It's interesting to hear Henry went to Australia, I had assumed he died, as I couldn't trace him. I can say that James wife was Sabina MOORE (though I like Sabrina Moon very much) -- this bit I am sure that I have right as they are my 3x great grandparents. Her name tripped me up a lot in the early days, with many varieties. Christel --- > > > Hi Christel and Group > > I have David Legg in my family tree. 1. [DOR] Roger Morey
    2. My 8th Great Grand Father, Roger Morey, immigrated to America in 1628 aboard the Abigail which sailed from Weymouth, June 20th. He was born 18 May 1610, Drimpton, Broadwinsor Parish, Dorset. He apparently returned to England, probably the Isle of Wight, and then immigrated again in 1630 aboard one of the ships of the Winthrop Fleet, which sailed from Yarmouth. Much of what I have set forth can be verified by various sources. However, I have found the following ancestry of Roger which cannot be verified: Thomas Mowry b. 15 April 1578, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire Elizabeth Thomas b. abt 1588, Cadney, Lincolnshire m. abt 1608 London, Middlesex Nicholas Mowry b. 1604, Hampshire George Mowry b. 1606, Gloucestershire Roger Morey b. 18 May 1610, Drimpton, Dorset George Mowry b. 1550, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, d. 1642 Elizabeth Rogers b. 1549, Pools, Dorset, d. 24 Dec 1612 Salisbury, Wiltshire m. 18 May 1573, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire Thomas Mowry. b. 15 April 1578, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire Mowery b. 1524, Biddenden, Kent Elizabeth Fuller b. 1528, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire George Mowry b. 1550 Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire Can someone suggest sources that I might research to determine the accuracy or inaccuracy of this information. Your ideas and assistance would be greatly appreciated. James (Jim) E Morey 6071 Trevino Ct Fort Collins, CO, USA _samjem@aol.com_ (mailto:samjem@aol.com)

    2. Jon Baker
    3. Christel Eliza Ann Legge baptized Glanvilles Wootton 6 Sep 1857, same day as her older sister Virginia. They were recorded as daughters of William Legge and Elizabeth nee Kingsbury. (Source Dorset OPC, my own transcriptions). Virginia was born Jun Qtr 1856 (Dorchester), Eliza Ann Jun Qtr 1857 (Dorchester) (FreeBMD). In 1861 Virginia is recorded at home in Glanvilles Wootton with William and Elizabeth, but no sign of Eliza Ann. However there is a death recorded in Dorchester in Sep 1857 for Eliza Ann Legg. Would need to check Death Cert to find out age. There is no burial recorded in Glanvilles Wootton that matches this, so cannot be sure that this is the same Eliza Ann. If it is it does not explain the Ann Eliza recorded in nearby Holwell in 1861, recorded as daughter of Oliver Jeanes. For the Leggs of Burton Bradstock, you would expect to find them recorded in Bridport Reg District, but there is not a birth that would match Anneliza Legg at the appropriate time. Hope this helps a little Jon Baker Dorset OPC Co-ordinator -----Original Message----- By some weird chance I already have an Ann Eliza LEGG c 1858 (but born Wootton Glanville -- where I cannot find a baptism) in my tree, in 1861 she is the "daughter" of Oliver JEANES and his wife Matilda KNELL (married 1852). She has always puzzled me. I assumed she was Oliver's child from an affair/fling but that Matilda agreed to take her on, having had no children of her own -- however she is not with them subsequently. Christel
