Hello, Antony the "Certificateman" - could you contact me again, please. I was not able to view your previous email and I don't have an email address for you. Thank you, Christine
Dear Pat >From your enquiry it would appear that you are not aware that William Barnes, Rector of Came, was one of the more famous of Dorset literary figures - almost as well known as Thomas Hardy. He is mainly regarded for his dialect poetry. You will find large archives on him in The History Centre, The Museum or The Library in Dorchester. regards Sue Merkle ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vanessa Marshall" <van.m@o2.co.uk> To: <dorset@rootsweb.com>; <hayward325@btinternet.com> Sent: Saturday, September 11, 2010 12:02 AM Subject: Re: [DOR] William BARNS > Dear Pat, > > Dorset FHS via Find my Past has: > > Dorset Memorial Inscriptions: > > Deathday: Not given > > Death year: 1886 > > Birthday: > > Birth year: 1801 > > Age: Not stated > > Title: Parson > > Forenames: William > > Surname: BARNES > > Place name: > > Place: Dorchester > > Dedication: St Peter > > Denomination: C of E > > County: Dorset > > Country: England > > Relation: > > Monument: Statue > > Grave reference: 2309 > > > This William BARNES (Rector, aged 80, born Sturminster Newton) appears on > the 1881 Census living in the Rectory at Winterborne Came with his > daughter Laura BARNES (aged 48, born Mere, Wilts) > > Regards > > Vanessa > Dorset > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Pat Hayward" <hayward325@btinternet.com> > To: <DORSET@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, September 10, 2010 11:03 PM > Subject: [DOR] William BARNS > > >> Hello >> There is a Death Registration for William BARN(E)S aged 86 >> December quarter Dorchester 5a 205. I knew that there were at least three William Barnes born circa 1800 One was a vicar, one a farmer and mine who had worked in London as a civil servant. On retirement at the age of 60 he had returned to Dorset where he was born . He was on the 1861 census at Hazelbury Bryan aged 60 with wife Sophia, son George Barnes and grand daughter Catherine Bird. It is thanks to Vanessa that I now know that the 1886 death was not the one I was looking for. I should have remembered that my William was not found on the 1881 census. I now have to look for one between the 1871 and 1881 census. Regards Pat

I would like to make sure that he is mine before I send for a death cert. Thanks Pat. Dorset Family History Society's next monthly meeting at St John's Church Hall, Ashley Road, Parkstone will be held at 7.30 for 8.00 on Monday 13th September when David Smith will give a talk entitled, "Kingston Lacy - An Undiscovered History". Our bookstall and sales table will be present.
Hello Derek, If it has been reported upon, it would have been in the Dorset County Chronicle. Dorset History Centre has microfilms of editions 1824 - 1957. Unfortunately, I won't be visiting until at least Christmas week (if they are open then), so maybe sks might do a search for you. I don't think this is likely to have got more than a simple mention in a newspaper. They tended to report capital crimes and might just mention others. Dorset History Centre holds local newspapers on microfilm. I don't know whether they will do searches. Dear Frank, I actually know that! I gave Becki the Oxford English Dictionary terms for Larceny and Felony. Also as he was already a felon because he had already been convicted previously (probably theft / robbery), I was being cheeky about calling him a naughty boy! I know very little of Robert other than he was transported to Australia in 1839 and was stated to be a Stonemason apprentice. Chances are that he was associated with a Stonemason as he earned a living as a Stonemason during his life; as did his sons and grandsons. >From his death certificate it records him as being a native of Cornwall and being born in 1811. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Christine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
