I have death certificate stating WLR Stokes died age 61 in 1949. This would mean he was born c. 1888. The certificate says he lived in NSW, Australia for 43 yrs and was born in Exeter, UK. This means he arrived around 1906. Both parents are named on the death certificate. However, looking at it again, the writing seems same for Ralph Stokes and as if another person has written William Leonard above the Ralph. The certifcate was issued by NSW BDM and is official. Ellen Marriages for Broadwindsor are online on the Dorset OPC (1563-1812, http://www.opcdorset.org/BroadwinsorFiles/Broadwinsor.htm), but there is no marriage recorded for Samuel Bartlett. Baptisms for Stoke Abbot from 1783 (http://www.opcdorset.org/Stoke/StokeAbbot/StokeAbbot.htm) are also online, so only children who were baptized there in 1781 or 1782 would not be found. I would consider it somewhat unlikely that a removal order would have been enforced by Broadwindsor if Samuel and Betty were married in the parish, although by tradition marriages took place in the bride's parish rather than the grooms, so I would be looking for a marriage elsewhere. Do you have any idea where Betty/Elizabeth was born? If so this would be the more likely marriage place. There is a Samuel Bartlett listed in the 1851 census for Broadwindsor, aged 84, with what would likely be grandchildren or children recorded in the adjacent households, but he is a retired miller, which might suggest he would not have been subject to a removal order, that said circumstances could have changed significantly in the intervening 60 years. But even at 84 he would have been a little too young to have been married 1781 (married at 15 if this age was correct). Sorry I can't help more Regards Jon Baker Dorset OPC CO-ordinator -----Original Message----- i am trying to find out more information about the marriage of Samuel Bartlett to a Betty probably at Broadwindsor. There is a removal order that a Samuel Bartlett and his wife betty went from Broadwindsor to Stoke Abbot in 1781 and i am trying to find out the date of their marriage at Broadwindsor or if there was one. Also at Stoke Abbot, if there were any more children born to them which i cannot find in the OPC site as they do not go back far enough. Sarah was with them in 1781 when they went to Stoke Abbot i am just wondering if there were any more children born there. Can anybody help.
