    3. Hello Graham, Have you tried the Weymouth Families Forum on the Weymouth Local Family History Site - see www.weymouth-dorset.co.uk You might have some luck with someone who knew the family. There is also a page about the railway, which you might find interesting. 3. BlankI am trying to find out information about my Grandparents early life in Weymouth. They are Harold Graham Allard and Margaret Allard (Nee Wright/Croftwright). They arrived in Weymouth about 1927 when they had to move from Bryanston, Blandford due to it being sold up by Lord Portman to settle Death Duties. Harold was employed as an Estate Agent for Lord Portman and Margaret worked as a nurse at the Blandford Cottage Hospital. When they moved to Weymouth they had two children Margaret Ruth and Michael Graham. They moved into 8B St Mary Street, now Marks & Spencer's. Another child was born there in 1928 Mary Elizabeth, so the premises were now too small and so they looked for larger premises to move into within the town. What I would love to know is where my Grandfather was working during this period as well as my Grandmother having her Nursing skills. She may have been a District Nurse or even midwife. He being a clerk I think had something to do with the GWR or Weymouth and Portland Railways office down on the quay. Any information at all about this family would be most appreciated. Thank you in anticipation. Graham Allard

    3. Hi Christel Sorry to blow your nice theory out of the water but Henry Venables was Vicar of Buckland Newton for 45 years until his death in 1850, so would have known Jethro man and boy, indeed he would have baptized and buried him it would seem, but for some reason, didn't officiate over a marriage. Sorry I cannot help any further, despite Jethro and Jane being residents of my parishes, but unable to shed any light on their alleged marriage. One avenue that I was going to suggest was to see if Banns exist, but after a quick check Dorset History Centre does not have Banns for Buckland Newton prior to 1849. Regards Jon Baker OPC for Buckland Newton and Glanvilles Wootton -----Original Message----- From: Christel Muncaster I assumed that as they had their children baptised as a married couple in the same village where they had had an illegitimate child baptised that they must have done (perhaps the vicar was new?) Jane was born c1796 in Wootton Glanville (daughter of Nathaniel and Betty); she had several illegitimate children in Buckland Newton -- Elinor 1820, Mary Ann Miller 1824, Anne 1826 baptised in WG; then Louisa 1829-1834, Jethro Bazle 1832-1850 She then seems to have "married" Jethro Bazle (b1813 Buckland Newton-d1838); they had a further 3 children, Frederick 1835, Hezekiah 1836, James 1838-1838. I have found the family in 1841 with Jane, Jethro jnr, Frederick, Hezekiah Bazle, together with Mary Jeanes (some difficult writing and some strange transcriptions but eventually I got there!) I've looked on opcdorset in Wootton Glanville and Buckland Newton for the marriage, and searched in Ancestry but no luck, Christel

This more or less confirms my information. Can you tell me why you have included Stephen George Holt as I am not aware of this connection. I know Sarah(1) Ann Pitfield 1851 died in 1852 but the second Sarah(2)Ann Pitfield of 1852 did marry William Young for which I have a marriage certificate. Sarah(2) had 6 children with William but for some reason on the birth certificates she gives her name as Sarah Young formerly Pitfield for the first two children and then as Sarah Young formerly Hawkins for the others. I can only believe that this is probably due to Sarah's family all who died around 1852 and that she went to live with her Uncle & Aunt who lived in the same street and they were named Hawkins. Found reference to this in the 1861 census where sarah is shown as a lodger. My mother who is still alive (101yrs) tells me that she remembers her grandmother Sarah using the name Jane on some documents, why she does not know. Her death certificate in 1914 names her as Sarah as does the inquest report on her death. Unfortunately I think the mystery over surnames may never be solved. Thanks again for your input.
