Many Thanks again Venessa Much appreciated Rod -----Original Message----- From: Vanessa Marshall Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2010 2:42 AM To: dorset@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DOR] Dorset Lent Assizes 1817 Dear Rod, Unfortunately, there are very few records kept for the cases appearing at the quarterly assizes. Unless the case was a 'juicy' one such as assault or covered a particular point of law, details were rarely kept. Those records that have survived are held at Dorset History Centre - you can search their catalogue at http://www.dorsetforyou.com/dorsethistorycentre However the ledgers were kept, but they give extremely limited information. They have been digitised and are accessible via Ancestry. The entry for Robert is: Dorset - 1817 When tried - Lent Assizes Name - Robert SAUNDERS Crime - Larceny Imprisonment - 6 mths. The assizes were reported in the local papers, but unfortunately 1817 is too early for many of them. The Dorset County Chronicle ran from 1823 - 1957, microfilm of which is held at Dorest History Centre. However, if he came from the Sherborne area, you may be more lucky - The Western Gazette (amalgamation of the Sherborne Mercury & Western Flying Post) ran from 1737 - 1867. Microfilms of the issues from 1740 - to date are held at the Somerset Studies Library in Taunton . The Sherborne Journal ( a rival to the above) ran from 1764 - 1886, but only some issues have survived before 1829 and are not on microfilm. The pre-1700 parish register entries have now been transcribed and uploaded (thanks Jon) and are complete for Baptisms, Marriages and Burials with the exception of a number of illegible entries that I hope to resolve at a later date. Bob Hills Marnhull OPC

Sorry about the confusion. The age discrepancy I was referring to was of that between my Elizabeth (1790) and Elizabeth Richards Tolley (1796). That and the difference in their birthplace. I have a lot of information regarding my family history, and am in the process of confirming as much of it as I can. Hence my query! I will follow up on your suggestions. Where do you go from here? Well I would start searching for her in the earlier census years. Check her age and see if she gives the same birthplace in each one. Find out where Stoke Ambden is and where the parish registers are located, and arrange to search the baptism register. If you find her with her husband in one census, and in the next she is a widow, you will have narrowed down the period when her husband died. Search Netherbury burial registers for both of them, and you will have another confirmation of age at death. Age discrepancies are very common. However, I would not rely on any data found in other trees which are often full of errors. Use online trees as clues only, do the research and reach your own conclusions.
