    1. [DOR] William MAYO (1800 - 1878), Farmer of Poxwell Manor, Dorset, England
    2. Peter Ferreira
    3. Is there anybody out there descended from, or researching, my ancestor, William MAYO, a farmer of Little Piddle Farm, in Puddletown, and of Poxwell Manor Farm, both in Dorset, England, in the 1800s? William MAYO was born in Friar Waddon, Dorset in 1800. In 1831, in Piddlehinton church, William MAYO of Puddletown married Rebecca STONE (1809 – 1883). William was a yeoman farmer in Little Piddle (in Puddletown) till about 1833; from about 1834, William was a yeoman farmer of 1,300 acres in Poxwell Manor Farm, Dorset (censuses of 1841, 1851 and 1861). William was a churchwarden in Poxwell from 1834 to 1867. For the 1871 census, William 71, a retired farmer, was enumerated in Charminster, with Rebecca 62. William 78 died in Charminster in 1878. Rebecca MAYO 74 died in 1883 in Dorchester district. William and Rebecca had issue, including: 1. William MAYO, born in Little Piddle, in Puddletown, Dorset, 1833. William 25 married his second cousin Emma CHAMEN 22, 1859, in Charminster, Dorset. William farmed in Charminister, till about 1866; after about 1866, William was a farmer of 1,320 acres, living in Friar Waddon Farm House, in the parish of Portesham. William MAYO died in 1893 and was buried with m.i. in Portesham St. Peter’s churchyard. Emma died in 1925 and was buried with m.i. in Portesham St. Peter’s churchyard. William and Emma had issue. 2. Jane Greenham Stone MAYO, born in Poxwell, 1839. In 1862, in Poxwell, she married John CHICK. John was a farmer in Compton Valence, Dorset. John CHICK 75 died in 1907 and was buried with m.i. in Compton Valence churchyard; Jane CHICK 90 died in 1930 and was buried in the same grave as her husband. John and Jane had issue. 3. John MAYO, baptized in Poxwell in c. 1844. In the late 1860s, a yeoman farmer, John took over Poxwell Manor Farm from his father. In 1868, in Dorchester district, he married Rosa MANLEY. They farmed Poxwell Manor Farm, from before 1871 to after 1881. Rosa died in 1887, in Wimborne district; John 69 died in Wimborne, in 1913. John and Rosa had issue. 4. Sarah (Sally) MAYO, born in 1847, in Poxwell. In 1867, in Warmwell church, Dorset, Sarah married Joseph Fowler ROPER. Joseph was a yeoman farmer: in Dorset and Wilts. Joseph and Sarah retired in Netherhampton parish, Wilts, where they both died and were buried, with m.i. in Netherhampton churchyard, Wilts: Joseph, aged 62, in 1906 and Sarah in 1919, aged 72. They had issue. 5. Charles MAYO, baptized in Poxwell, 1849. In 1874, in Dorchester district, he married Emily Ann READ. Charles was a yeoman farmer in Charminster and, later, Piddlehinton. Charles MAYO 43 died in 1893 in Dorchester district. Emily Ann MAYO 78 was buried in Radipole, St. Ann, Dorset, in 1932; Charles and Emily Ann had issue. 6. Ann MAYO, baptized in Poxwell in 1851. In 1874, in Dorchester district, she married Thomas Strange BIGGS. Thomas was a wine merchant and importer, living in Dorchester. Thomas died in 1905, in Dorchester. Thomas and Ann had issue. Best wishes. Peter Ferreira Toronto, Canada.

    3. Hi David William Cross appears in the 1861-1891 censuses as listed below. Baptism, birth and parents marriage references also below. The interesting point is that in 1881 William's wife was Emeline, while in 1891 it was Sarah Ann. Both were from Norfolk, both the same age, suggests to me that Sarah Ann and Emeline may have been the same person. Unfortunately cannot find a marriage that fits (I was tempted by a marriage in Taunton between William Cross and Emmeline Cox in 1881, but it was Sep Qtr, i.e. just after the 1881 census). Author: WillardBacon57 Surnames: Chubb Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.dor.general/6256/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Henry Chubb is baptized between 1699 and 1702, in Allington, Dorset, or a nearby village. The nearby villages would probably be within 5 miles of Allington. If you have access to baptismal lists from this time period, and general area, I would appreciate your taking a look for him. I am particularly interested in his parents. willbacon@charter.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
