    3. Hi Lynne, Say hello to Keith for me. I would like to point out something - I too had always thought that 2 births registered at the same time with the same surname, vol & page numbers would be twins, but found this to be incorrect. I have 2 children with the same surname and registration details in one of my lines, who I thought were twins. However only one came up with the family on the next census, so I assumed the other had died, but couldn't find the death registration. Further research found the baptisms - both on the same day (so far, so good - I thought) then I noticed that they had different parents listed - so checked census details again and hey presto they were cousins and both still living! The parents must have travelled into town together to register the children. I have also found that although twins would probably be on the same page as they would be registered at the same time, it is possible that one could be on the next page (this has happened to my son's friends who are definitely twins, but have different references) as there is a maximum of about 12 names per page. I have learnt that one can never assume anything in this game!! Regads and best wishes, Vanessa Dorset ----- Original Message ----- From: "Keith Radford" <keilyn03@tpg.com.au> To: <dorset@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2011 11:11 PM Subject: Re: [DOR] Hodder/Hoare > Hi Felicia, > I know you have looked at freeBMD > have you seen the following > Marriages Jun 1862 > Hodder Henry Bridport 5a 701 > > Hoare Mary Ann Bridport 5a 701 > > > Births Jun 1863 > HODDER Henry William Bridport 5a 417 > > Births Mar 1866 > HODDER Frederick W Beaminster 5a 398 > > Births Dec 1869 > HODDER John Bridport 5a 392 > > > the other entry for John Hodder birth Sep quarter 1869 > appears to be a twin with a Mary M > Hodder John Bridport 5a 388 > Hodder Mary Martha Bridport 5a 388 > > > Deaths Dec 1888 > HODDER Henry 51 Bridport 5a 23_ > > > > 1891 census has > Hodder Mary A. 3. Dear Felicia, I'm not connected or researching this family, but have found the following for you (some of it you may already have): 1871 Census: Henry HODDER 34 Coach Builder b Bridport Mary A HODDER 32 b Bradpole Henry W HODDER 7 b Bradpole Frederick A HODDER 5 b Bradpole John Hoare HODDER 1 b Bradpole Residing Middle Street, Bradpole 1881 Census - They are all still living in Bradpole and John's elder brothers are working in the Coach Building business also. Marriage registration: Henry HODDER & Mary Ann HOARE Jun 1/4 1862 Bridport District GRO Ref: 5a - 701 (Note: Bradpole is in Bridport Registration District) Birth registrations: Henry William HODDER Jun 1/4 1863 Bridport District GRO Ref: 5a - 417 Frederick Alfred HODDER Jun 1/4 1865 Bridport District GRO Ref: 5a - 406 John HODDER Sep 1/4 1869 Bridport District GRO Ref: 5a - 388 Baptisms: Herbert Henry HODDER s/o Henry & Mary Ann 3 November 1867 @ Bradpole Another source gives the baptism as Herbert Edward HODDER - other details identical. John House(sic) HODDER s/o Henry & Mary Ann 30 November 1869 @ Bradpole (I believe House to be a mis-translation of Hoare) No birth / death registered for a Herbert Henry / Henry Herbert or Herbert Edward / Edward Herbert) but there is the following: Edwin Herbert HODDER Sep 1/4 1867 Bridport District GRO Ref: 5a - 401 - Birth Edwin Herbert HODDER Dec 1/4 1867 Bridport District GRO Ref: 5a - 243 - Death Death registration: Henry HODDER (aged 51) Dec 1/4 1888 Bridport District GRO Ref: 5a - 23? (possibly 231 - not clear on original index) Index of Wills: Henry HODDER - The will of Henry HODDER late of Bradpole..., Coach Builder who died 18 November 1888 was proved at Blandford on 19 June 1889 by John HODDER of Bridport, Accountant, the brother, one of the Executors - Personal Estate: £880 12s 8d. (It may be worth getting a copy of the full will) 1891 Census: Mary Ann HODDER is still residing in Bradpole with sons Henry & John. Henry is a Coach Builder and John a Grocer's Assistant. Frederick Alfred HODDER is in Cowley, Oxfordshire with wife Laura Elizabeth and son Frederick Henry and is a Coach Painter. 1901 Census: Mary A HODDER is still residing in Middle Street, Bradpole living on own means. Henry W HODDER is in Southampton as a Cycle Fitter. Frederick A HODDER is in Basingstoke, Hants with wife Laura & 4 children John HODDER appears to be living with a cousin in Litton Cheney and is a baker. 1911 Census: Henry HODDER is in Woolston, Southampton and is a Motor Engine Fitter. Fredeick Alfred HODDER is still in Basingstoke with Laura & 5 children. I can't find John in 1911. Death registration: Mary Ann HODDER (aged 73) Jun 1/4 1910 Bridport District GRO Ref:5a - 205 - This seems the most likely one. I believe Henry HODDER to be the son of Henry Gundry HODDER & Sarah BAKER who were married on 21 June 1836 @ Bridport. I think Henry was born in either late 1836 or early 1837 which was before Civil Registration began and is therefore not registered, so there won't be a birth certificate for him. He appears on the 1841 census (aged 4) in Barrack Street, Bridport with his parents and a brother John (8mths) - His father is a Coach Builder. They are still there in 1851 and he has 4 siblings, but the first John has died and there is another John aged 4. In 1861 census (aged 24) he is still with his parents and his 5 siblings, both he and his father are Coach Builders of Bridport. Henry Gundry HODDER was baptised on 4 August 1813 @ Bridport being the son of Henry HODDER & Sarah ? (unknown). (He has at least 10 siblings all baptised in Bridport) I can send full details of the earlier census' and the baptisms if you want them. I hope this helps, Regards Vanessa Dorset ----- Original Message ----- From: "Felicia Riley" <felicia.r@talktalk.net> To: <DORSET@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2011 3:45 PM Subject: [DOR] Hodder > My maternal grandfather was John H. It looks like Mary would have been born about the early to mid 1820's and there is a gap in Joseph / Elizabeth's children (Janes 1822 and George 1831) so there is a possibility that Mary could fit in there somewhere. Felicia I have a John Henry Hodder on the fringe of my tree. He is recorded in the 1851 census as being age 15 born in Beaminster, when it looks like he was an apprentice printer, but he disappears after that. I have John Henry as the son of a baker called John and Elizabeth. John died young and Elizabeth remarried to George Bradford. By contrast I do not see Henry Hodder the coach builder before 1861, though I note that he is shown as the son of Henry Hodder (b.c.1814, Bridport) also a coachbuilder and Sarah, so not the same, but could be a cousin. Regards Peter

Do you know Elizabeth's maiden/previous name, if so have you checked for Walter's birth registration under that name? There is a strong likelihood that he was born before they were married - I noticed in the 1891 census that he is 10 years older than the next sibling in the family, which possibly may indicate that he is not the son of Walter "Senior". Also his birth is more likely to have been in 1874 according to the census records (statistically if aged 6 in the 1881 census, then as the census was taken on April 3rd there is a 2:1 probability roughly that he was born in 1874 - sadly Ancestry, FMP and others always use the approx birth year calculation poorly). Just a couple of suggestions, hope they help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hello My 4x g grandmother Nancy Watts was born c1812 in Wynford Eagle (bap. in Toller Fratrum). She is the daughter of William and Sarah. I am fairly certain that this is the William & Sarah living in Toller Porcorum in 1841 aged 65). The only William Watts that seems to fit is a William Bater Watts bap in 1779 in Cattistock (son of James and Ruth (nee Barrett)). This fits in with the fact that one of Nancy's siblings married a child of a Mary Beater Watts, who I can also place in Toller P. The trouble I am having is finding the marriage of William & Sarah; the only ones I can find are too early or too late or too far away. They had 4 children baptised at Toller Fratrum, Nancy being the first. I am sure that the Thomas Watts b 1808 in Loscombe (baptised in North Poorton) is also theirs. There is also the possibility of 3 children baptised in Netherbury between 1804 and 1810. Therefore I think they possibly married around 1802/3. Can anyone find a likely marriage? I would be most grateful for any thoughts. Christel
