    1. [DOR] Molly (Mary), Bula, and Richard Cull. (Richard Spicer)
    2. Richard Spicer
    3. Dear Vanessa. Thank you very much for the detailed information that you sent me, I am very grateful. I have John Cull and Honour Clavil in my family tree they were married on the 27th November 1740 at Corfe Castle. John Cull's father was Thomas Cull who died at Corfe Castle in 1735. I was trying to connect John and Thomas Cull with Molly ( Mary ) Cull, Bula Cull and Richard Cull, all of Corfe Castle. Still More work to be done. Best wishes Richard.

    1. [DOR] Johnson family
    2. Sue Stead
    3. I wonder if anyone can hep me with this particular problem. Elizabeth Johnson, born about 1770 in Blandford (possibly the Elizabeth Johnson baptised 27 Mar 1771 of James and Elizabeth) seemed to have had eight illegitimate children, all baptised at Langton Long, Dorset between 1791 and 1813. These were Catherine, Susanna, Elizabeth, James, Frances, Charles, Sophia and George. They were all described as natural son/daughter or baseborn son/daughter. Elizabeth may have lived at Langton Long or she may have lived at Pimperne as her son Charles was baptised at both places! At some point she moved to Bath, Somerset, where three of her daughters were married and she later moved to Cheltenham, Glos, where she died in 1840. I am intrigued as to who the father of all these children may have been. Elizabeth was obviously not short of money. Three of her daughters married well (one died young and one I cannot trace). Her son James was mentioned as Capt James Johnson of New South Wales in family documents. Her son Charles was living in Cheltenham in 1840 and of "independent means". And when Elizabeth wrote her will in 1835 she left cottages and land in Pimperne and Tarrant Hinton. Has anyone heard of "Springfields" in Pimperne or "The Vineyards" in Tarrant Hinton? Where did Elizabeth get her money from? Did she have a rich father? Or a rich lover? Can anyone suggest where I go from here? Sue Stead

    1. Re: [DOR] 1. Molly (Mary), Bula, and Richard Cull. (Richard Spicer)
    2. Vanessa Marshall
    3. Dear Richard, Further to my earlier message, It appears that 'Molly' may have actually been Mary. I believe you have the marriage record of Mary CULL & John PYKE on 17 January 1770 @ Corfe Castle, which gives the witnesses as Bula & Richard CULL. I would think these are Mary's siblings, which almost certainly means that the three baptisms @ Corfe - Molly 1750, Buley (Bula) 1754 (d/o Richard & Elizabeth) and Richard 1759 (born 1757) are siblings and therefore all children of Richard & Elizabeth CULL. It appears that Elizabeth (wife of Mr Richard CULL) was buried on 20 December 1771 @ St Martin's, Wareham and Richard on 15 September 1780 also @ St Martin's, Wareham. It looks as if Richard & Elizabeth CULL moved to Wareham with their children sometime between 1759 & 1770 (when Mary / Molly married). There are wills listed on the Dorset OPC site: Richard CULL, Mercer & Shopkeeper of Wareham, Dorset (proven 21 August 1788) Bula WHITE, widow of Wareham, Dorset (proven 4 February 1836 - so she must have died before then) and her husband Stephen WHITE, Brewer & Malster of Wareham, Dorset (proven 21 February 1806) which confirms his burial date in January 1806) John PYKE of Wareham, Dorset (proven 25 September 1818) - Mary / Molly's husband? Getting a copy of Richard's will may give details of his children (and confirm whether or not Molly, Bula & Richard are indeed his children or not). I would get copies of Bula & Stephen's & possibly John PYKE'S also, because if you are lucky, wills often give lots of information about the descendents of a person, such as who their spouse is (if they outlived them) and who their children married and where they all lived at the time of the will being made, besides what items they considered had value. You can obtain copies on-line via the National Archives, Documents on line website for £3.50 (GBP) each. I hope this helps, Best Wishes, Vanessa Dorset

    2. Vanessa Marshall
    3. Dear Richard, Are you sure that Bula & Buley / Buly CULL aren't the same person? I ask because there is the following marriage listed: Stephen WHITE (- Mr of Wareham) to Buly CULL (- Miss) married by licence on 29 October 1771 @ St Edward the Martyr, Corfe Castle. Witness signatures given as "Stephen White & Bula CULL" - could this be an error and actually be the signatures / marks of the bride & groom? There is also the following baptisms listed @ Lady St Mary, Wareham: Stephen WHITE on 29 August 1773 - s/o Stephen & BulaWHITE Francis WHITE on 25 February 1777 s/o Stephen & Buly WHITE Stephen WHITE on 25 February 1777 - s/o Stephen & Buly WHITE Thomas WHITE on 22 March 1778 - s/o Stephen & Bula WHITE Elizabeth WHITE on 28 December 1779 - d/o Stephen & Bula WHITE Ann WHITE on 22 May 1782 - d/o Stephen & Bula WHITE Thomas WHITE on 6 January 1785 - s/o Stephen & Bula WHITE Mary WHITE on 19 September 1785 - d/o Stephen & Bula WHITE Burials @ Lady St Mary, Weymouth Elizabeth WHITE on 15 January 1774 - d/o Stephen & Bula Ann WHITE on 21 Masrch 1802 - d/o Stephen & Bula Stephen WHITE on 4 January 1806 Unfortunately no age is given, but probably the father as there is also the following: Stephen WHITE on 2 April 1838 aged 64 (therefore born abt 1774), which would fit with the son baptised in 1777. However, I can't find a burial for Bula / Buly WHITE. There is also a Bula Elizabeth CULL d/o Richard & Ann CULL baptised on 22 October 1784 @ Lady St Mary, Wareham As Bula is an unusual name, it seems likely that Richard is her brother and named a daughter after her. I hope this helps, Best Regards, Vanessa Dorset ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Spicer" <richard.spicer@ntlworld.com> To: <DORSET@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2011 5:02 PM Subject: [DOR] 1. 3. I see there is a Buley, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth, baptised 08 Jan 1754. The Richard born in 1757 could quite well be named after his father. However I can't find a burial for Bula born in 1752. Just thought Bula and Buley were rather similar and families tended to name later children after one who had died. Best wishes Ann Brown Hi Ann. Thank you for your reply. I think that they must be different people as Richard Cull and Bula Cull were both witnesses at the marriage of Mary Cull to John Pyke on the 17th January 1770 at St Edward the Martyr Church at Corfe Castle. Best wishes Richard Spicer

    3. I do not think that anyone can look at certificates of BDM in that time frame, you have to purchase the certificate from The Registry of Birth Deaths & Marriages. Someone could look at the index for St Catherine House & get the reference number which would make the certificate cheaper & you would need the certificate to see who were the witnesses. 1. [DOR] Martha Harvey's Book
    2. Shirley
    3. Hi Listers, I have in my possession a small book entitled 'Now or Never : 'The Holy ,Serious ,Diligent,Believer,Justified,Encouraged,Excited, and Directed'.By Richard Baxter :MDCCCXLVII. A big subject in a format 3 " X 2 " X ,214 pages . The inside cover is inscribed Marther Harvey, Admiston Hall Dec 8th 1849 I have Martha Harvey's details ,christened 9th Nov 1834,birth abt 1834,place Piddletown ,Dorset, Father , William Harvey ,Mother , Elizabeth. At 6 Martha lived in Mill Lane Piddletown with her parents and siblings . At 16 she is living with three of her sisters and brother in law James Mayers also in Piddletown. The front page of the book and Martha's address and age make me think that perhaps she was given it at her confirmation ,there have been some sort of labels stuck back and front but they have come off over time leaving only a dark outline. The book came to me with other papers from my Aunt after her death,It probably belonged to my Grandma(Hilda hand) who was related to the Harvey family ,and as a child i remember visiting my Mum's cousin Jessie Harvey at Tincleton.Jessie was also my Mum's teacher at Puddletown school. The reason I am writing this is because while i am honoured to have this memory of my family from 1849 ,I would much prefer it if it went to a direct descendent of Martha. It will mean nothing to my children when i am gone and will then have lost it's meaning as a family heirloom, and nice piece of documentary history for the right person. If you are that person, and have the correct proof, I would like to send it to you .By that i mean x something gt grandchild ,not distant relation as i am myself. I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help trace the proper owner or by co -incidence is related to me through Martha. regards Shirley Dutton-Keir
