Hi, The estimated date of 1769 came from a book called Days Gone By.. Vol. II, by Caroline Dillman, page 243. This book was (maybe still is) sold by the Roswell Historical Society, and is a history of many families of the Roswell/Crabapple/Alpharetta area. Vol. I also has a lot of information and pictures. The author got this information from Glenda McCracken of Augusta, Georgia. Dillman has interviewed several of the Dorris' for the information she has published in these historical books and newpaper columns. There is a second source I got off GenForum posted by Keith Midgette in 1999. He says William Dorris emigrated from County Down, Ireland to Virginia in 1769, and moved to Edgefield County. Now if this is true, then the question of where James was born appears resolved. Many of the posting I have seen and text I have read say it is unclear if James was born in Ireland or South Carolina. William and Violetta married in 1745, William Jr. b 1750, John b. 1753 and James b. 1757. Provided the year of emigration is correct, James would have been born in Ireland and was around 12 years old when they came over. I have been looking for a passenger list to confirm what ship they came over on and date. But, I have had no luck so far. Do you know of any good sources to find this data? I had been looking for lists around the 1757 timeframe due to the "not sure where James was born question", but the two sources of this 1769 date are telling me I'm looking for records 12 or so years to early. I would appreciate any additional information or links you have on our family. My direct email is usslantzer@aol.com
