My direct ancestor is Wiliam B. Dorris who came to America from Northern Ireland (Newry) about 1750. He was a Presbyterian--unlike most Dorrises in Ireland today who appear to be Catholic. But I've done some reading on the history of Ulster and King James' Ulster Plantation, wherein he re-located about 100,000 Scottish Presbyterians to Northern Ireland--finally resulting in a majority. I'm trying to find out if the Dorris clan may have been part of this Scottish migration in the 1600s--possibly from Durris, Scotland near Inverness. The Dorris.Net family newsletter seems to go along with Dorris being pure Irish (Gaeli: Dubh Ruis) --but after having my DNA tested by ancestry.com--turns out there's much more Scottish DNA than Irish, and vert few Scottish sounding names. Hope someone has figured this out. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
