James Dorris and Nancy Cook are my ggg-grandparents. We do pronounce it as Door-is, and it has been pronounced that way for at least 200 years in Crabapple Georgia which is where James Dorris and Nancy Cook are buried. My grandmother just passed away two week ago at age 97. Jasper Newton was her grandfather. She was 10 years old when he died. So at least for James' line, I know how the name is pronounced. I will agree that may not be the way it was pronounced when the family came off the boat, and we will never really know that. I just consider it preference at this point. I also have information that states this family came from Holland, but I can not find any supporting records on that.
