Years ago families would traditionally "reuse" names. If you have more than one relative with the same names as this line, it is a good indication that your branch is part of this tree. I have pasted below a paragraph from a Tennesee archive talking about the Dorris family. "... Josef Dorris, a lineal descendant of General Josef Dorris, and a native of County Downs, Ireland, had nine sons, seven of which emigrated to America in the early part of 1700, locating first near Baltimore, Maryland. After a short period, William, Isaac and John went to Amhurst county, Virginia, and located. While here William married, and a son from this marriage by name of Josef Dorris migrated to Mecklenburg, North Carolina, and became a noted Baptist minister. He married Cynthia Irwin, and from this union there were two sons, John Irwin and Thomas. After her death, he married Mary Williams and by her had ten sons and three daughters, among whom were: George P., Stephen, Isaac, William, Roland, etc. Several of these sons were with General Francis Marion, who led the North Carolina forces in the Revolutionary war, and made efficient soldiers..." Hope some of this helps. I am still in the process of building our tree so please let me know if we can share information. By the 1820 census he was living in Ross Township, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He had a son named William, who then had a son named John. This is my direct line. From what I can determine Francis Dorris was born sometime between 1770 and 1780. Now I am wondering if my Dorris line ties into this one. I have just started to try and follow this line back to Ireland. Francis and his son William were both born in Ireland according to the census. They would have had to come to America sometime prior to 1810. With a search I did on the surname Dorris in Ireland, I am finding that most came from County Antrim. With the spelling being Doris then it was County Tyrone. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The shaft is 80 ft deep with 5 ft of water in the bottom. Dorris and other parties were working the mine with a horse hoister. Another means of descending is a ladder composed of a single stringer with strips nailed across. Above the water line is a platform extending halfway across the shaft. When the accident occurred, an empty tub sat on the platform. Dorris was descending on the ladder, and was within 35 ft of the platform when one of the strips broke loose, causing him to lose his hold and he precipitated to the bottom. In falling, Dorris struck the tub and plunged into the water, where his body was found by his fellow workmen. The remains were hoisted to the surface and taken to Hurlbut's undertaking establishment on South Main street. An examination of the body showed no marks of a serious nature. Deputy Coroner Potter investigated the ci! rcumstances and came to the conclusion that the fall against the tub rendered Dorris unconcious and he drowned in the water Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
