I have been to the Franklin battlefield and spoken to their staff and they say there's no evidence that he's buried there. His sister, Martha Adeline Dorris Nimmo is my gg grandmother. I've read his diary. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The name Dorris which I am interested in is in my opinion English/scottish/welsh origin which may have arrived from France with the Normans as names similar to this are common ie D'Oris. It could also have got to Ireland with King Williams mainly Dutch,Scottish, Hugeonet army in around 1690 or with subsequent Hugeonot arrivals to England and Ireland. The name does however appear to have been anglicised from the gaelic Dubhros in the Tyrone area of Ireland to Dooris and Doorish. In County Down, there is evidence that the name Dorris is of Scoth Irish descent, and I have found no link to those of Tyrone. Mine was b ca 1852 or 56, possibly in AL and I do not know his parents name. He died 23 Sept 1927 in Arkansas-at least that's what the death certificate I have for GW Dorris shows. Mine was born Oct. 12, 1866 and died 1902. He was married to Mary Victoria Simpson. He was the son of John Grantham "Jack" Dorris and Elizabeth Brown. My George Washington Dorris is buried in Fox Cemetery near Providence, KY. His grandfather was a Primitive Baptist Preacher in Providence for many years. It has been a 30yr brickwall! The only thing, of which long gone family, remembers is his name and that he had a brother named 'Fred' that was a Baptist preacher. My George married Rosalene 'Nanny' Smith and they had 8 children - 1 of which was my grandfather George (Lee?) Dorris, AKA 'Babe' Was George Washington's occupation that of an undertaker? As for origin, family thought they were Irish. However, one now deceased 'cousin' says Indian. Go figure! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Missionary Baptist and Primitive Baptist split up and after much litigation, the Primitive Baptist got the log building and moved it to "Old Baptist Hill" in Providence. Andrew's parent's Elijah (63) and Polley (62) and also on the census. I think "Polly" has another name, maybe "Mary" Thomas DORRIS m. Sara TISON in 1871. Sara married John TURNER in 1884. My Father, myself and one of my sons have the same trait. We stand about 5'6", with muscular frame. A doctor told me that it is because our elbow attaches differently. I was wondering if any other Dorris's have this trait. If so then maybe we can trace it back to our ancestors. My Father's line is Dorris, Pyle, Wilcox & Blades. I guess it could be up any of those lines. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
