I couldn't tell you exactly where it was if my life depended on it. But it's there and I talked to the people in charge of the cemetery about what would have to be done to get the engraving on the tombstone changed. My family has Wesley's diary where he made entries during his stint in the Confederate army and he talks being in Franklin. But Wesley's diary cuts off a day or two before the battle. But the 'powers that be' at the cemetery wanted something like an entry in the diary from the day of the battle, plus military records, plus a dozen other things. I was young with a new family, a job and not much time or money. It just wasn't worth it. Anyway, thanks for your interest. It's a shame that the poor guy has to be misidentified, but that's just the way it is I guess. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The link below is a list of Gaelic-speaking Scottish highlanders who settled in Oglethorpe's Georgia colony beginning in 1736, compiled from various records as stated. Note that several are shown as being from "Dorris", Scotland. I can't find any modern town of that name but there is still a Durris, Scotland, that even has a website and I suspect that it is the same place, and likely the origin of the surname Dorris. http://www.electricscotland.com/history/america/darien.htm and http://www.durris.net/html/durris_-_history.html Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He is indeed buried in the Confederate cemetery in Franklin. However, someone spelled his name wrong on the tombstone, and they have him listed as Wesley Smith Norris. But check the records they have on him and his service in the regimen. Everything is identical to Wesley Smith Dorris. But after asking them what it would take to get the name corrected, it seemed like way more trouble than it was worth. Maybe someone will take this project on. It should be done. I'm just getting started. My records trace my family back to a William Dorris from County Down (1715-1795). His father was William J. Dorr (not Dorris) (1678-1718). Don't know why the name change. I've also always heard (and read in several sources that Dorris is Greek. Doris was a province in ancient Greece. Possibly a city in Asia Minor too. I've also heard the legend of Gen. Josef Dorris being given County Down. This is really nothing new, but I can't validate any of it. There are also members of the Dorris family living in France and French Canada who spell it the same way but pronounce it Dorree'. I have a cousin who went to Paris and discovered that one. When the family migrated to Ireland from Greece (I've also heard Constantinople in the 1450s to flee the Turks), did some of them stop off in France? This is all very fascinating but I'm pretty confused. I hope you've discovered more. ARNOLD was born in Shelby County, Indiana in 1886. Around 1903, she married Albert Anderson in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana. I do know they had one son who was named for his father. He, too, was Albert Anderson. In 1920, he lived with his mother and step-father, Albert M. Dorris in Memphis, Shelby County, TN. Apparently, his father had died or his parents divorced by that time. My great-aunt Ruth and her 2nd husband, Albert M. (Milton) Dorris made their home in Memphis and he had a barber shop on Beale St. I don't know any more about this great-uncle, Albert M. Dorris. However, I did see your post from several years ago. Did you find your Albert M. Dorris? It is, certainly, a shot in the dark. However, I did wonder if there might be a connection if you have found more information by now. I do not know where my Albert M. Dorris or my Ruth L. ARNOLD Anderson Dorris got to. So, that is why I am looking for them, mostly, looking for g-aunt Ruth and ! her son, of course, and any children there might have been from this marriage. Do you know when your Albert M. Dorris was born? The one I am looking for was born about 1881. Since it has been a number of years, I can only hope that you are still on the board and am interested if you think there might be a connection. Thanks! Than their was another marriage called the civil celebrant in Nevada in 6 may 1982. I just wished that I knew more about my grandfather. I would not mind information about Patricia since my grandfather did marry her. Information regrading her may tell me a little bit about my grandfather as well. Thank you!!!!
