I'm new to the list so am posting my earliest Dorris ancestor. Josiah was born 1796-8 in Tenn or VA (various sources various dates evidently he told census/ other government people anything he felt like saying at the time) He is probably the son of John Dorris. Josiah m Lucy Drury, 1816 in Smith CO. TN. moved to Illinois, Missouri and d in Solano CO. CA , 1871. Josiah appears to have had a brother Thomas who d in Nebraska and a sister Mary who m Steven Yokum. He also seems to have had a sister Rachel that m. John Drury and remained in TN. We believe that there is a possibility that Josiah's mother was Mary Priestly who m a John Dorris, 1788 Rockbridge CO. VA. This Dorris branch doesn't seem to fit with any of the other TN Dorris groups i.e. Joseph, and the boys that m the Frost sisters. Any other "California" Dorris clan on the list?? I posted the below note earlier today on GenForum under the Dorris Surname ...... I have had a problem for some time with the paternal connection of William Dorris (1761 - 1841) who married Eleanor Brown .. My problem is under standing the dates ... Most of what I read says William was the son of William "The Immigrant" who died 1795 in Orange Co, NC. The Immigrant was born in Ireland and started having children in the 1730 era for the next 20 years ... Are we to believe the William who was born circa 1761 is the Immigrant's son and not his grandson ??? For you folks who will answer that the younger William was born 1731 and not 1761, how will you explain him living to be 111 years old ????
