The Dorries family from which I am descended immigrated to Breese probably in the 1840s. Henry (Heinrich) was a very common name in the family as was William. Do you have any dates? There could be a link.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lNT.2ACEB/201.1 Message Board Post: I wonder if Samuel could be the son of Henry Dorris and Catherine Stiff. Henry and Catherine were married in 1844 in Gallatin Co., Illinois. I have four known children for them. 1. John Dorris 2. William Dorris 3. Sarah Dorris 4. Samuel Dorris Sarah married George Hamilton in Saline Co. Illinois in 1866. You should check out the census for them and see if it is a match to what you are looking for. You will probably have to look in the 1860 census under Catherine Dorris as Henry had died by 1853. Of course she could have remarried. But I do not know that she did or not. Anyway check that out and let me know what you come up with.

    2. Hi, I am researching my Dorris line and we, too, pronounce it DOORis. I don't have much information on my GGgrandpa Thomas L. DORRIS. He is one of my brick walls. I met him in CA, he was he moved there from somewhere in the MO, OK, KS area. He was in his 90's back then in 1958, and died not too soon after. I need a couple of chisels to attack this brick wall. Joanne

    2. We also pronounce it DOOR'is. And I hope fellow researchers have noted there are TWO Annette E. Smith's . Some of the replies are not mine....so I will try to clarify my John Dorris as being from Annette Edgeworth-Smith. Thanks.

    2. James Dorris and Nancy Cook are my ggg-grandparents. We do pronounce it as Door-is, and it has been pronounced that way for at least 200 years in Crabapple Georgia which is where James Dorris and Nancy Cook are buried. My grandmother just passed away two week ago at age 97. Jasper Newton was her grandfather. She was 10 years old when he died. So at least for James' line, I know how the name is pronounced. I will agree that may not be the way it was pronounced when the family came off the boat, and we will never really know that. I just consider it preference at this point. I also have information that states this family came from Holland, but I can not find any supporting records on that. I can find supporting records we came from County Down, Ireland in this chain of Dorris'

    1. Re: Dorris family newsletter
    2. Judy, I'll email you. I'd like to compare sources of data. I have James Sr. married to Susannah Elizabeth Merck and got this information from a book published by the Roswell Historical Society. Other sources I have seen on-line have this information this way also. I think I saw where the son of James and Susannah, William C. was also married to a Merck, but I will have to locate this recording again. With all the Williams, James, and Johns, this history book could very well be wrong, and I would like to verify and report the correction to the author in case another volume is published. She is very good on noting corrections in her family history books.

    2. I live in Woodstock now. I lived in Crabapple on Rucker Road across from the Rucker Cemetary. Old Rucker Road (the dirt road) ran behind my house, and Aunt Nora Rucker lived in the big house at the end of the dirt road. Did you know Aunt Nora? She was very old when I knew her as a child. Onnie Dorris Dempsey was my grandmother. She recently passed away. She was born in the house next to the fire station on Mid Broadwell road. She was married to Virgil Dempsey. I graduated from Milton in 1979. My parents are Pete and Sandra Dempsey. My dad died about 10 years ago. Please send me an email at usslantzer@aol.com. I'd like to compare notes and talk about the way it was.
