I was in Clonakilty last year and there's a bar named O'Donovans. The owner (a Donovan) is interested in family research and was involved in the Donovan clan meeting that was held last summer, not far from Clonakilty. You might write him. Small town- just write O'Donovan's Pub and I bet he'd get it. yours, Alison Clement At 01:11 PM 12/22/00 -0800, you wrote: >Posted on: DONOVAN Queries >Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/d/o/DONOVAN/queries/93 > >Surname: Donovan, McCarthy, McAuliffe >------------------------- > >I am trying to find the parents, descendants, and relatives of 4 brothers >who emigrated from the Clonakilty area between 1850-1890 to Boston, Lynn, >and Lawerence, MA. So near and yet so far. I also have a lot of Donovan's in my line from NB but no Denis that I can see. I also have Hartnett's and Driscoll's but they are from the Peterborough, ON area so I don't think that is a link. It is strange to see us share these 3 names and no visible links. Sigh. I am told that my Donovan's also came from Ireland into Canada. There were 10 siblings, 5 boys and 5 girls ( I do have a photo of the 5 girls as teens). I do not know whether the father's name was Timothy or Thomas. My ancestor Elizabeth Donovan was born in 1857. This line has been difficult for me to trace. Also searching for DUGAN, DOUGHERTY, HOWARD, MARKHART, LACOMBE, GAGNON, PAQUIN

Does anyone on the list have any Donovans that settled at one time or another in Washington County, Maine? This is the eastern most County in Maine. I am looking for a John Donovan who settled in Jonesport about 1790. He was born in Ireland but I don't know where. He married Anna Hicks MacDonald and they had at least one child named Thomas. This Donovan line stayed there until my mother was born then moved a little west into Penobscot County. Would love to share more info if anyone has a possible link..... Diana
Dear Elaine, While Con, Dennis, William, and John, are all family names in my particular Donovan branch, none of the other details fit. Sorry. Keep looking, though! Do you have any of their spouses' names? Sometimes that detail can give you something to go on. -----Original Message----- From: Elaine Donovan <emd@pacificcoast.net> To: DONOVAN-L@rootsweb.com <DONOVAN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, December 02, 2000 9:18 PM Subject: [DONOVAN-L] Fathers ancestors :Posted on: DONOVAN Queries :Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/d/o/DONOVAN/queries/90 : :Surname: Cornelius William Donovan, Dennis Donovan, William John Donovan :------------------------- : :Cornelius William Donovan born England 1895 sent to Canada about 1901 or :1902 :Dennis Donovan born 1893 England (London area) also sent to Canada same :time (brothers) :William John Donovan (father to above boys) born 1862 in Cork Ireland Married :to Helen Murray (mother of boys) :Boys sent to Canada from a Catholic home in London area. :Looking for any information about these four people - all now deceased. :Thank you. : : :==== DONOVAN Mailing List ==== :The Donovan Home Page can be found at: :http://www.crosswinds.net/~hallisey/Donovan/index.html :The Donovan Threaded Archives can be found at: :http://archiver.rootsweb.com/archives/DONOVAN-L :
Hi Barbara- First of all, have you been to your local Mormon Family History Center? If not, look them up in your yellow pages, under Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. In my area, they also list their Family History Centers in the white pages under --Family History Center! And the very best advice I can give you is to start a list--begin with your own name, and list your parents, and what you know about them, and your grandparents with same, and go from there. Join your local genealogy society. And be optimistic! -----Original Message----- From: Barbara <reelcurls@hotmail.com> To: DONOVAN-L@rootsweb.com <DONOVAN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, December 02, 2000 3:17 PM Subject: [DONOVAN-L] Margaret Donovan :Posted on: DONOVAN Queries :Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/d/o/DONOVAN/queries/89 : :Surname: Donovan :------------------------- : :I may be traveling to Ireland early 2001 and wanted to begin a search for :relatives there. Donovans were possibly Indian traders or connected to the Indian trade in the southeast, as the name is listed in the surname index of a three volume set of Indian affairs journals, located at http://members.aol.com/rarebk Once at the site, go to Booklists, then Native American Genealogy, and scroll down to the Cherokee Ancestry CD. There you will see a link to the surnames. This site has an on-line tutorial that explains how to conduct effective Native American Genealogy research (the 1835 Cherokee census is within that), also 2 CD's that appear to have magnitudes of resource material, and a surname index to Starr's "Old Cherokee Families and their Genealogy." There is more, but too much to list here. Very intriguing and unique site. Steve ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Thank you, Laurie! Bantry was most likely Honora's home, as it is a bit far from where the Donovans/O'Donovans are clustered. My grandfather Denis was a delivery truck driver for Macy's Dept Store; his father worked in a variety of jobs, mostly on the docks and doing construction work down in Hell's Kitchen. I'll keep this info and let you know if I find anything else. Have a peaceful Thanksgiving. Martha - I know what you mean about time allowing. I'm doubtful there's a connection here, but I'll give you what I do have. I just got this copy from the LDS library. I have my greatgrandfather, John Donovan m Honora Leyhane in the district of Bantry in the Chapel of Kilchrohane - marriage date - Jan. 30, 1864. Listed as John's father is Denis Donovan and listed as Honora's father is Murty Leyhane. I do know that they had a child, Denis Donovan who came to America, NYC area, became a fireman and died in a fire within his first year stateside. It's probably a very loose connection, but you never know. I also am aware that my uncle Tom holds the middle name Joseph and it's just an intuitive hunch there could be a shirtail relation here. Hi. My name is Martha Donovan Ahlquist. For years I've been doing research (as time allows, which isn't much!) on my father's family. The line I'm searching is: Denis Donovan b.20 Oct 1887, Carrigeens, Kilmacabea, Co.Cork. His parents were: Denis Donvan b. ca 1854 (presume Co. Cork) father:and Julia Grace b.24 June 1854, Drimoleague, Co. Cork. Denis had 5 siblings: Jeremiah, Irene, Patrick, Michael, and John. The family came to Staten Island, New York ca.1900. Jeremiah died in Bayonne, New Jersey; Patrick never married, died Staten Island; Michael, according to family history, had many children and also died on Staten Island. Julia Grace's mother was Mary Collins (no other info), and her father was Jeremiah Grace. She was baptized at Drimoleague and there are still a number of Grace and Collins families in that area. Denis Donovan's father was Joseph Donovan, but I have no other info about him.
Looking for information on the above couple. Mary Ellen BARNETT born probably 1835-1840 near Rosscarbery, County Cork, Ireland. Must have married Daniel O'BRIEN about 1860 as their first known child was Honora b 1861. Other children Margaret, Daniel, Jr, Nellie, Brenda and Minnie. May have had others I do not know about. Parents of Daniel were John O'BRIEN and Margaret DONOVAN. All the above children came to the US starting in 1883 and lived in the Boston, NYC and RI areas. Mary Ellen probably died in Ireland as Daniel Sr came to the US in the 1890s and remarried in Boston. Children refused to let him in the house with his new wife!! (Family story! And don't we all have a few of those!!) Thanks. Barbara Prior Jameson marksnana@juno.com List Mgr: PRIOR, PRYOR, JAMESON & MOLSBERRY
Hello, I am wondering if this DONOVAN-L list also works with the name of DONIPHAN. I am descended from the (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN, born: abt. 1662, died: 04 Feb 1729, line from his marriage to 1st wife, Aimee ?, through their daughter, Amy DONIPHAN, and her 1st husband, John KELLY, born: abt. 1660, died: 04 May 1715, md: in 1682 to Amy DONIPHAN. (Amy DONIPHAN (KELLY) later married Edward RANSDELL.) My further descent is through the daughter of Amy DONIPHAN and John KELLY who was Ann KELLY, born: abt. 1696, in Richmond Co., VA, died: abt. 1734/35 in Richmond Co., VA, who married William JENNINGS, Jr., born: bet. 1695 - 1700, died: 07 Jan 1732, and through their son, Edward Salley JENNINGS, born: Jan 1720. Is it possible that the Aimee ? mentioned above as the wife of Alexander DONIPHAN was named Aimee SALLEY/SALLEE? If this list does not deal with DONIPHAN could someone let me know. And, if, indeed, this list does handle DONIPHAN, I look forward to hearing from anyone who might have more connecting information with this lineage. My initial info about the KELLY - DONIPHAN families has come to me just last week from Linda KELLY (KELL.) In advance, I thank you. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick - Barnett
