Hi, my Donovan's did settle in Illinois and Wisconsin, but I have very little info on them. Only that my 2nd Great Grandmother was from a family of 10 Donovan's, 5 sons and 5 daughters. Don't know if that helps you at all, I haven't had much luck with my Donovans Joy

My Donavan's (often spelled Donovan) came to Kansas via, Ohio, and before that Washington Co., Maryland. My great grandfather Daniel Griffith Donavan was one of ten (5boys, 5 girls). His father Joseph was born Sept. 1815 in Washington Co. Maryland and was married to Harriet Griffith. Joseph's father was John Donavan who died abt 1831 in Maryland. It is rumored in our family that 5 Donovan brothers left Ireland lived in NY and worked on the Erie Canal. The brothers then became seperated in NY. One of the brothers was my GGGF John Donovan. He was born in 1812 in County Cork Ireland. We have heard that his brothers remained behind in NY. We estimate that they would have immigrated somewhere between 1830-1840's. John Donovan then dettled in Harvard, IL area about 1850. Does anyone out there have a similar story? We do not know the names of the other brothers or there parents names. I am seeking information on my grandfather, John L. Donovan. He married Caroline Christ on November 27, 1939 and resided in Bayonne NJ. He had at least 2 brothers, Thomas and James. Outside Ardfield/Rathberry are the following . . . Many, many Harts and Donovans . . . One v ery old stone says: "Erected by James Donovan of Ardfield in memory of his wife Mary who died 27 Sept 1882. Also, in the old cemetery behind the modern hotel in RossCarberry, there are a mutitude of O'Briens, O'Donovans, and Harts. Nothing is perfect, but these are the items I found crawling around. My great grandfather was John Donovan. He was born on 24 June 1852 and at one time lived in Imlay Canada. Could this be the same John Donovan? He moved to Cheboygan, Michigan sometime around the 1880's and married Bertha Schmidt. Their children are: Elizabeth Donovan (from John's first marriage - his first wife died at a young age - I do not have much info on her). First of all, My Donovans came at a different time than yours, but I've got all your names...While I was first looking for my grand uncle in W.Va. I believe I found Donovans in Va. and W. Va. that came about 1700's. I hope you find them -- good luck, Eleanor

My previous post (copied below) indicated that the Dennis Donovan I am searching for was born in 1885. This is a correction - he was born in February of 1855. (Previous post: I am looking for information on Dennis Donovan who was born in New York in Feb of 1885. I do not know much more info at this point other than he married Julia Terry who was also born in New York in Oct of 1860 (not sure when they were married). They moved to Michigan or Wisconsin before 1883 and were settled for sure in Wisconsin by the end of 1884. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!)

I'm writing regarding my Donovan family also. I have my "roots" back to my gr. gr.gr.gr. grandfather Cornelius Donovan who married Martha Snodgrass in Botetourt Co., VA 28/Apr/1792. There I hit a wall - and no matter how many family names that come up in all of the messages - and there are many, many of the same given names - none of them seem to fit in my family. Hasn't anyone gotten back to any Donovan's of that era and in that territory? Seems like all have come from New York - Canada - Australia - PA - etc., and I am so frustrated!!! There has to be someone out there that can claim family roots with my clan - surely!!! Cornelius & Martha had a son "Jeremiah" born in VA 1790. He married a Martha Cooney in 1814. They had a son by the name of Cornelius and two daughters - Margaret - b. approx. 1828 - d.2/10/1859. Mary - b.1819 - d. 1852/1854. I have ships lists of passengers full of James Patrick, Dennis, Jeremiah, etc., etc., and nobody fits!!!! Come on somebody out there - I know this has to fit someone! I can bring you right on down with the James - Cornelius - Jeremiah's and John right to my father whose name was Jeremiah after his grandfather Dr. Jeremiah Donovan -who also had seven sons that were doctors. My Donovan's migrated from KY to IL in a covered wagon and as far as I know that group stayed there until they' all died. Hope to hear from someone before I finally give up hope completely - I am a total novice at this and I have gotten totally confused (not that I wasn't already) and frustrated - HELP PLEASE HELP!!!
