Surnames: Donovan, Golden, Condley, Waters Classification: Queries Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wJT.2ACEB/669 Message Board Post: Seeking information with respect to Michael Donovan and his wife Margaret Golden who gave birth to Margaret Donovan in Cohoes, NY in 1843. Margaret had a sister (name presently unknown) who married a Condley and later gave birth to my wife's grandmother, Mary Ellen Condley, in 1876 and two brothers - Edward and Frank Condley. Mary Ellen (Nellie) Condley later married John Worthy Waters and lived for many years in Washington County, NY, where she raised 8 or 9 children. Margaret Donovan went on to join the convent as Sister Mary Agnes Gonzaga and died in Sault Ste Marie in 1871.

My brother Steve Donovan and I are putting a book together on our Donovan line. With the help of this message board and libraries we have been in contact with new found descendents of John Donovan. We have recently obtained earlier genealogies that were put together by Donovan Jacobs in 1924. Another report put together in the 1970's by Rosemary Azzaro and yet another from Marilyn Meyers in 1980's (grandchildren & great-granchilden of John). We have also been aided by new found cousins Maureen Atwood & Sheila Stewart. With all of the recent information and the hundreds of new documents, we might be close to finding out who John's parents were. Perhaps his brothers too and any sisters that might have existed. We have alot of the same first names in our line as well. My GGG-GF John Donovan was born in 1815 he married Hannah (Hanarah-some say Hanora) Sweeney, born 1821 in Ireland. We presume Skibbereen but must first confirm. Two of their children were born in NY in 1844 & 1846 (we are confirming the name of the cities-Lockport or Buffalo). The other children were born in McHenry County, IL. The names their children are: Michael, Catherine, Edith, Frances"Fannie", Hannah, John Francis, Margaret, Mary Ann & Patrick. John and "Hannah"'s grandchildren by son Michael are: John, Timothy, Edmond "Edward", William, Raymond, Mary, Ruth, Benjamin, Alphonse aka Michael/Albert & Frank "Francis". *Edmond & Raymond were twins. Most of these children went by their middle names to make it all the more confusing. Some of the confirmed descendent surnames through son Michael & wife Catherine (Gleason) Donovan that we are also researching are: GLEASON O'BRIEN DWYER CALLAHAN McGUIRE COSTELLO RYAN BURKE CAREY JACOBS CONWAY HEDERMAN MURRAY SVECAR AZZARO WHITE GILLESPIE O'MALLEY CAREY HENDRICH LYNCH POULTON ACKERMAN HAGMAN & KELLERMAN. We hope to have all this new information compiled soon. We would still love to hear from others that might be a linked or might have further information on the parents of John or his brothers. Please email me @ 115104.2031@compuserve.com Thanks again!

If the |Patrick who arrived with Joanna was my Patrick, he would actually have been about 28 that year, so I'm not sure he would qualify as a youth, but it could be one of those elastic terms whereby if he was a family man he was a youth, maybe? As my Patrick seemed not to start his family till the mid 1850's whenhe had his 1st son Danial, when he was 35 or close enough, it's not impossible that it is the right Patrick. I'd be intersted to know if you are aware of the name of the boat or ship Joanna and Patrick would have arrived from Ireland in.... Do you have any cluyes? If so, I might be able to see if there are any records of the boad leaving Ireland or the UK. Once again, thanks for the message, it's very enlightening.

Surnames: Donovan Classification: Queries Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wJT.2ACEB/658.2 Message Board Post: Look for Jim Donovan's message on the board - it makes interesting reading. I am a decendant of Patrick Donovan, who although says in the British 1881 cencus that he was born about 1820 in Poplar, east London, I've found no evidence that that is actually his place of birth. Family legend says that this branch of the family were from Cork, and I strongly believe that he was the youngest of the brothers you talk about.- Jim Donovan mentions in his latest message that Timothy's wife Joanna arrived in Boston to be with him in April 1848 with a youth by the name of Patick Donovan. If this is my Patrick, he would have been 28, and I'm not sure this would have qualified him as a youth. However, he never had his 1st son, Danial, till 1855, so time enough to get to London, where he proves to be a married man with 5 sons and 2 daughters in the 1881 cencus. Anyway, if you havent seen it already, I urge you to look for Jim Donovan's message.

    3. April 16, 2001 Dear DONOVAN-L Rootsweb List Subscribers, Does anyone have any knowledge of O'Donovans who emigrated to either Cuba or Puerto Rico in the later half of the 19th Century? My great grandmother was Lucrecia O'Donovan who married my great grandfather, Manuel Zarragoitia Trelles in Cuba. According to my mother she was from Ireland. However, she may have either been born in Puerto Rico or come from Puerto Rico prior to marrying my great grandfather. Lucrecia O'Donovan's father's name is unfortunately not reliably known to me. Any help much appreciated, Bill Fernandez (Zarragoitia) P.S. Here is the genealogy Bill Fernandez mother -> Rosa Zarragoitia grandfather -> Francisco Zarragoitia O'Donovan b. 1884, Matanzas, Matanzas, Cuba grandfather -> Manuel Zarragoitia Trelles b. ?, Matanzas, Matanzas, Cuba grandmother -> Lucrecia O'Donovan

    3. Hello Elaine again! Another thought - before you actually visit Co Cork would suggest you contact the Mallow Heritage Centre @ 27/28 Bank Place Mallow, Co Cork, Ireland Tel : 022/50302 Fax 022/20276. They are the computerised records centre for Co Cork and are a mine of information. The earliest Donovan I can definately say is mine is Patrick Donovan who, according to the 1881 cencus was born in 1820 in Poplar, east London. I am however not so sure he was born in London, and strongly believe he was probably born in Cork and came to London. His wife Ellen was from Cork, too. n the 1881 cencus, he was living at 96 Prusom Street, St Georges in the East, east London, with his wife and children:- Daniel (my g.g.grandfather), born 1855, Patrick, b. 1856, Jeremiah b 1857, Mary b 1859, Michael b 1862, Margaret b. 1869 and James b 1869. All of his children were born in St |Georges in the East; in 1881, Patrick jnr and Michael worked around the docks, Jeremiah was a carman, James was a schoolboy, Mary and Margaret were domestic servants, but unusually, Daniel was a life insurance salesman - did this mean he had some degree of a halfway decent education? Patrick snr was listed as a musician. Also living with them is listed a Catherine Hegar! >ty, a 70 year old widowfrom Cork, 'aunt to the head of the house'. Can anyone shed any light on this family, because my research is drawing a blank. Where did they fit in to the grand scheme of the Donovan clan? Was Patrick on of the four brothers who left Cork for London? His name, and those of his family, are not exactly unusual - can ANYBODY help with ANY ideas AT ALL? >Re Patrick Donovan family from Cork My grandfather William John Donovan born April 1, 1872 we think from Drumaleague Cork - married Ellen Murray - had two boys Dennis 1893 and Cornelius 1895 both born in London area. William worked as a dock worker - I notice in your list of children there is a gap of a few years from 1864 to 1869. I know I'm grasping at straws but do you think there is any connection? There does seem to be a lot of Donovans from Cork. I hope to go there this fall and see what I can find out Elaine - daughter of Cornelius > >==== DONOVAN Mailing List ==== >Please do not send attachments / attached files to the list.
