    1. [DONOVAN-L] Police Depts in USA
    2. Martha Ahlquist
    3. The Police Depts in every town/city in USA have records depts and are always willing to help with requests for information. Just be sure to ascertain beforehand who it is in the dept. that you will address your written request for info; be sure to include as much information as you can about the person; be sure to ask for date of hire, date of discharge and type of discharge. Be sure to ask for any info that they can give re: "incidents" in the policeman's record---if there are incidents that were disciplined or honored, you should go to the local newspaper's archives and search for reports of such incidents. Who knows? Your great-grandpa might be written up in the local paper for saving a life, or solving a crime! -----Original Message----- From: jane logan <saltbox@webtv.net> To: DONOVAN-L@rootsweb.com <DONOVAN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, August 26, 2001 9:27 AM Subject: Re: [DONOVAN-L] Donovan policeman in Rhode Island To the person writing re: ucle Cornelius Donovan who was a policeman - have you by any chance contacted the police department in Pawtuckett to see if they can be of any help? Mary Kane Donovan(Aunt Mame)was my great-aunt. Patrick Donovan was my God-father. Have quite a bit information on the Kane's. The limit of my information goes back to our grandparents grandparents. Mame and my grandfather Ben, were the children of Patrick and Margaret Cole Kane. Pat and Margaret were both born in Meath County, Ireland, and came to the states as young children around 1850 to 1854. They were the children of Richard and Mary Finnegan Kane, and James and Catherine O'Rouke. Your Uncle Bernie had a lot of information on the family, but I don't think he wrote much of it down.

My Irish so far as I know have all been southerners (Wexford, Waterford).I don' t know that my Donovans are. Here's what I know. I know that James and Ellen's first two children, William H. Donovan and Thomas F. Donovan, are born in New York state, 1855 and 1857 respectively. James then takes the family to Virginia (Norfolk area presumedly as his obit was copied to there) where Mary (my gg grandmother) was born April 1861. From there to Indiana and from there to Macon Missouri. I know that WH's wife's family was from Buffalo, NY so there may be a connection location wise there. Maybe we'll be able to make a connection

He actually married Margaret RILEY (daughter of John and Mary) in Dec. 1888 in Fall River, MA and their daughter Julia was born the following year. Again, family history insists that Julia's parents were Irish, I'm going on the assumption that Jeremiah and/or Hannah were Irish and transplanted to England. Any information on this chain is greatly appreciated!
