Hello Maureen There is a very good history of the Donovan Clan written by Miriam Donovan, a teacher at Cork Grammar School for the Clan Gathering last year. I believe it is still available from Regina Donovan (of Eagles Whistle fame) at rdonovan@flash.net. The area of southwest Cork were our homelands and kingdom and most Donovans eminate from there (Clonakilty, Drimoleague, Skibereen, and Donovans Castle). If you have not visited there it is a beautiful area with lovely friendly helpful people. I am lucky in a way,in that my line comes from Cloyne in eastern Cork so there are not too many different families to have to interpret. Hope this is of help. It is so nice to receive interesting responses and I thank you for taking the time to tell me that there are many Harts & Donovans living in this area. I realize County Cork has many major cities and I actually don't know where my ggrandparents came from. So- I shall start looking for them in Clonakilty. I'm so appreciative of how everyone on these boards is so 'in the spirit'. Anyway, would you mind confirming for me that Jeremiah didn't have a son Patrick? I know that my Patrick had a daughter named Annie (of course since, as you stated, all of these Donovans are probably related it doesn't mean much...) and just want to definitely rule your line out! Thanks again! Courtney
Joe: Do you know the names of your Jeremiah's parents? I have checked the map containing the counties of Ireland and couldn't find Clonakilty. Does it have another name? My ggrandfather was a Jeremiah Donovan (1830-1900) and he was born in County of Cork. His parents were Timothy Donovan & Margaret Hart. He had siblings but I don't know their names. Any connection???? Maureen
Maureen, I am not Joe but I also have a Jeremiah from Clonakilty born 1858 - 1908, Lived in Illinois. You can find Clonakilty on a map it you go to www.rootsweb.com/~irlcor/index.html it is on the coastof the Celtic Sea and in between Skibbereen and Kinsale. If you run across a Jeremiah with these dates keep me in mind. Just a general observation . . . First of all, Clonakilty is easy to locate on "almost" any map of Ireland showing County Cork. Is is in the southern part of the county west of Cork and down on the coast. A beautiful place indeed. If your ggrandfather is from Clonakilty and is Catholic, their records extend back to 1809. The priest, Msgr. O'Sullivan, lives right across the street from the Church: Immacuate Conception. If you write him I am sure he will locate your records if they're there. A small "token" is appropriate. There are indeed a ton of Donovans and lots of Harts in and around Clonakilty. There is even a restaurant in town named "Hart's" and a pub named Donovan's." I have a Timothy Donovan, but he was born in 1842. It is at least interesting to note that his parents were James Donovan and Mary Hart. Mary Hart's sister, Joanna, is my gggrandmother. She married Timothy O'Brien in Immaculate Conception (the old site where the National School is next door now) in 1825. There are Hart's buried in the cemetery at Kilkern just outside of Ardfield. Also, there are Hart's in the cemetery at Rosscarberry behind the Celtic Ross Hotel right along the coast. Plenty of Donovan's lived in Mountain Common, often times simply called "The Mountain" today. I just thought you'd be interested in the fact that there are a bunch of Donovans and Harts in that area.
