My James lived in Vermilion Co., IL. This James was born abt 1787 in VA. I wonder if he could be connected to your VA Donovans? Can anyone help me with the father and siblings of this James Donovan? 3. My grandfather, Dr. Jeremiah D. Donovan, was born in small village of Cornishville, KY Dec. 7, 1836. He died in Lovington, IL Dec. 6, 1920. He graduated from med school at University of Louisville (KY) School of Medi- cine in 1868 and after practicing medicine in KY for a time he moved to IL settling in Lovington where he practiced until shortly before his death. He had seven sons that were medical doctors. One graduated from the U of L in KY - the others graduated from med school in St. Louis, MO. They all practiced medicine in the state of IL at the same time. There was one son, Z.A. Donovan that was an attorney in Chicago, one, Lloyd Donovan, was a tailor and my grandfather, James Perry Donovan, was a farmer and owned a sawmill here in KY before moving to IN where he lived until his death. My gr.grandfather's father was a James Donovan, b. 1814 and his (James's) father was another Jeremiah Donovan b. 1799, VA, d.1853 unknown where. I would also appreciate any information that anyone would have about the family of Donovan's. There are so many families of this name and especially with the same given names that it is very difficult to trace them back on the correct family line. Hope this does help someone....

    3. Kerry, I believe Kathleen is referring to St. Peter's Cemetary in Staten Island. I was there once, about 5 years ago, and it seemed to me that about one-third of the place was populated by dead Donovans! Staten Island was-and still is-home to countless Donovans and O'Donovans. Some of my father's relatives moved to New Jersey, and I know there are many Donovan lines there, too. -----Original Message----- From: Kerry358@aol.com <Kerry358@aol.com> To: DONOVAN-L@rootsweb.com <DONOVAN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, November 01, 2001 7:59 PM Subject: Re: [DONOVAN-L] Re: Donovans: Staten Island, New York :Kathleen, : :I have several of the Donovan names that you mentioned but they are buried :in a St. Peter's Cemetery in Jersey City, New Jersey. 3. Ingonish is in Nova Scotia. I can't say as to exactly where because I've not been to Nova Scotia before. Many Waterford, Cork and Wexford irish came to Nova Scotia because it was a cheaper fare than going directly to the USA. I don't have Donovans that I know of that came thru Nova Scotia I just saw all of them and thought I'd put it here to the list. Chris Doehring St. Louis, MO

I haven't yet tried them in another cencus, but I can't imagine for one minute why I haven't. I cannot imagine why I haven't because I've tried with most other branches I'm researching; I suppose it's because I've felt, with so many Donovans in the area at the time, that I'd be hitting my head against the nearest wall. This is stupid I know, because at the end of the day, I've been researching for long enopugh to know I should have at least tried something so fundamental. So for reminding me about what I suppose should have been my first afterthought after finding the family in 1881, I thank you very much. I will try looking them up next time I get to the Family Records centre in London..

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wJT.2ACEB/193.342 Message Board Post: I am seeking information on Cornelius Donovan (b. about 1835 in Ireland). In 1870 he and his family lived next door to my ancestors (Bowen/Bohan) in Castleton, Staten Island. The census lists the wife of Cornelius as Bridget, and children Mary, John, Catherine and Dennis. There is also a Cornelius Donovan (died 1900) buried next to my Bowens in St. Peter's Cemetery. The tombstone shows him buried with his wife, Margaret, who died 1920, and also names a daughter, Mary. I am not certain about whether this is the same Cornelius Donovan. Do you have any of these names among your Staten Island Donovans? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Kathleen

These might well indicate whether the place of birth was different to that given in 1881. There is a small amount of data I've discovered in London on my Donovan history web site: http://irishdons.homestead.com/donovan.html The information of these earlier census is not indexed in the same way as 1881, but if you have a good address it might be worth a check (if you haven't already!!!)

The lists were submitted by someone else who transcribed his transcription. I just saw all those Donovans and thought maybe someday if not presently they'll help someone.
