    3. This is a resend of message I sent about a week ago with partial answer to Jen McKemie's question. It never reached the list because of an address problem that our Listowner Carol Queen just pointed out and corrected for me. Jen - one other important primary document that you did not include in your list is the 1654 Civil Survey of Donegal - it is on line at http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/donsourc.htm JP ==================================== Jen - Are you aware of Rev. Francis Makemie who left Donegal in 1683 for Somerset County, Maryland and generally regarded as the founder of the Presbyterian Church in America? I don't know a lot of his personal family history, but I expect he is pretty well researched. From what I have read, he was born in 1658 at Ramelton of Scots parentage, enrolled at the University of Glasgow in February 1675/6, and was licensed in 1681. He died in 1708 and is buried in Accomac County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Makemie's emigration to Somerset was the result of a letter sent by its local leaders to the Presbytery of Laggan in 1680, asking for a "Godly minister" to serve the local populace. This was somewhat surprising in that it came from people who were either established church or Quakers, but Maryland had passed an Act of Religious Toleration in 1649 and was pretty unique, until the founding of Pennsylvania in 1682, as a place where various religious groups could co-exist peaceably. Francis Makemie was specially chosen for this task by the Presbytery of Laggan, but he did not come alone. He was accompanied or followed by other Presbyterians which led to the first recognizable Ulster Scot community in America. Several hundred of them were in Somerset by 1690, my own Polk/Pollock family among them. This movement abated after the Battle of the Boyne when the conditions impelling Presbyterians to leave Ulster were much changed. Makemie established many churches in the Eastern Shore area (the portions of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania between the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay) and organized the first Presbytery in America in 1706. This community formed a nucleus that was in place to welcome and assist the later, much-larger migration of Ulsters Scots beginning in 1715 and continuing throughout the 18th century. I am sure you can find out more about Rev. Makemie by doing a Google search. Perhaps this will lead you to some additional information concerning your own McKemie line in 1600's. I am researching my MCK lines in Donegal in the 1600s. Where can I check to see what kind of records are available? I've found online records here (I'll share the links in case someone else can use them): 1609 Pardon List http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/donegal4.htm 1630 Muster Roll http://members.aol.com/Manus/dngl1630.html 1665 Hearth Money Rolls http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/donega10.htm Is anyone aware of any other sources online? ANd if not online, where else should I target my search? Also, how common were wills in the late 1600s in Donegal? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
