In this sort of case, where we are working with transcriptions, I find it helpful to put myself into the situation of someone reading and trying to transcribe --- NOT typewritten wording -- but rather: words in running handwriting -- often unclear, often from blurred microfilm, microfiche, or photostat copies. In doing this, I try to visualise how the two different but similar names might look in such running writing -- and then it is often possible to see how the alternative reading occurred. Of course this is not a foolproof method, but it can be valuable in trying to move forward a little -- but will still need some other confirmation from a different source. Hoping that this helps.
