Hello List I am trying to find my GGGrand Parents from Ireland. Thomas BARCLAY & Ellen BEVAN they were both born there. In 1846 they married in England and had my GGrandFather William BARCLAY he was born July 1846 in England. I have no idea where?? the census here in USA just says England. I don't know if there is a census for those years. I found all this information on William's marriage certicate. I have been all over the net trying to get more information with no luck. I did find Thomas 60 & Ellen 53, listed in the 1870 census in Richmond New York. But nothing in the other census that match them both. It would help if I knew where in England they lived.I'm also trying to find out if William had any sibleys. Thank You for any help you can give. Dear Vicky, Do you have the marriage certificate for your g.g.grandparents Thomas BARCLAY & Ellen BEVAN?That would probably be your best starting place, as it would give an address. Have you tried searching on the freebmd indexes http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ These are not yet complete but you might find the entry you need. If that fails you could try searching on the same database for Thomas's birth entry. You'll then need to send for the appropriate certificate from England. If you find an address you could then try the 1851 census. Sometimes people on the list will search it for you, or you can order the film of the census from a LDS (Mormon) family History Centre. Hope this helps. Sorry - that should read William's birth entry!! I see an entry for a William BARCLAY registered in Stepney in the December quarter 1846. Unfortunately there's no way of knowing whether this is the correct entry, other than sending for the certificate. You could also try www.1837online.com This has the official BMD from the Public Record Office. It will only give the GRO reference which enables you to order a certificate more cheaply than just giving ONS (Office of National Statistics) the approximate date of birth. The site does charge but it is a relatively small fee. I had a few units spare from my last foray on the site and I checked the Jul-Sep quarter for Barclay. No William. There was a William Barclay born in the next quarter Oct -Dec 1846 The reference is Vol 2 Page 457. Registrar's district was Stepney (an area in East London) You would need to order the certificate if you think it is your William. See www.statistics.gov.uk for costs etc. It may take some time if you are overseas as the on line ordering applies to UK residents. Once you have the location you can then search census records and local records.
