I'm looking for anybody with any information on these two families: Ellen Doherty (b. 1909, Giblin, Rasheeny, Clonmany) emigrated to the USA, and there married a James Byrne of Gweedore. It may be the general Gweedore area, but as that bit's hearsay, I can't be sure if that is where he came from. Her brother, Michael Doherty (b. 1901, Giblin) married James Byrne's sister, Bridget, who was also supposed to be born in Gweedore. Ellen and Michael's parents were Cornelius (Con) Doherty (b. abt 1851, Rasheeny) and Susan Doherty (b. 1868, Magheramore, Clonmany). My connection is that my gGrandmother Susan Doherty (b. 1896) was Michael and Ellen's sister. Also, according to her Ellis Island record, another sister, Alice, went to New London, CT, to her aunt Mrs. Mary Reilly (23 Chapel St.) in Sep 1921. She died in America soon afterwards. If you're any connection, I'd love to get in contact. Michael Ó Nuadháin
A Mhícheáil, a Chara, The Byrne name would have been rare or absent in the Gaoth Dobhair area during the early part of the twentieth century, and indeed there are few of that name here now. The 'pre-mobile' telephone directory is a reasonable guide to the distribution of surnames and I think that you can now access the Irish Telephone Directory OnLine. A quick glance would seem to suggest that the Byrnes are more numerous in the west of the county and I would look for James Byrne in the Rosses rather than in Gaoth Dobhair. 'Arranmore Links' by Barney Gallagher lists just one Byrne family on the island. For Arranmore watchers, I think that the book has been republished in 2004. Aranmore Links should be available from ABC Bookshop, Letterkenny and Four Masters Bookshop, Donegal Town. There is one thing that I would like to figure out - how did the Byrnes come to be living in Donegal. Have they been here since the time of Aodh Rua Ó Domhnaill or have they just figured out that this place is the nearest to Heaven that you can find on earth? Beannacht Dé, P.J. Ó Domhnaill. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Ó Nuadháin" <michealonuadhain@eircom.net> To: <DONEGALEIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 07, 2004 12:52 AM Subject: [DONEGALEIRE] Byrnes of Gweedore / Dohertys of Clonmany > I'm looking for anybody with any information on these two families: > > Ellen Doherty (b. 1909, Giblin, Rasheeny, Clonmany) emigrated to the > USA, and there married a James Byrne of Gweedore. I would be interested in learning where your Doherty/Byrne's emigrated to in USA. My grandmother(b.1873) was born in Ardara area( Carn/Derryness/Beagh) and emigrated first to Phila. then to Hazleton/ Wilkes Barre PA area. There were Byrne relatives in all of these areas, most notably Cornelius (Con) Byrne ( b.1835) a prominent business man in Hazleton.I seem to recall Doherty's in Haz./WB area too. Con Byrne was one of 12 children born to William and Mary(McHugh or McCue) Byrne.I have the names of all sibs of Con; Daniel(b.1845), Joseph, John, James, William, Hugh, Catherine, Mary Ann, Bridget, Margaret, Francis, Patrick. I have been able to find Catherine,Joseph, Hugh,John and poss. Mary coming to USA and in Hazleton area at one point. Don't know how many children they produced except Con and Daniel or where they might have lived I know nothing of any of the Byrne's who remained in Co. Don. except my great grandfather Daniel. He married a Mary Gallagher. My grandmother was Catherine, the eldest. There were 2 other daughters, Mary who married a Dan Sweeney, and Bridget who I believe died unmarried. The males were John, Patrick and William. William is buried in cemetery in Ardara, as is Bridget, John and Patrick alleged to have gone to work in the mines in Montana and died there. Maybe your Gweedore Byrne family might be in some way linked to mine? I do have ancestors on my mother's side of the family who were from the Gweedore areaand also ended up in the Hazleton/Wilkes Barre PA area too-Sharkey/Ferry/Mann/Bon(n)er/Gallagher. Regards, Meg

I'm afraid I have no further information on the Byrnes, as none of them would have been any relation of mine (their descendents would be through the Dohertys). All the information I have is on the family group sheet below (child no. 6 & 9). The Dohertys had a sister who went to New London, CT, and cousins who went to Boston, MA, so I would hazard a guess that they stayed in New England. All these people would have emigrated in the 1900/1910s. I'm from Donegal, and still living here, so I've got the phone book, and see what you mean about the rarity of the name - it's not common in this direction either (Inishowen). I've no idea how they came to be here - I've the same problem with my own name (Ó Nuadháin - Noone) came to be here, and that story is lost in the mists of time over 200 years ago. I do like your nearest place to Heaven theory! Beannachtaí, Michael
Hi, Many Munster names are now in Donegal since the 17th century - they chased the Herring which was plentiful in the Gweebarra Bay then - McHugh, Mckelvey, McGeehan, etc are names from Clare and Mayo - the Gweebarra was the primary fishhing location for the people of the West during the reign of Elizabeth. Our Doherty aancestors are another story. Regards, Patricia Sharkey, daughter of McNulty, daughter of McMonagle, Sweeney, Ward and back to Doherty again.on every side - That's 6 generations and that's all one can go by record - myth, legend and speculation aside. Regards, Patricia Sharkey in Fintown, Donegal via Derry and Urris and Fintown. Sin e an sceal ----- Original Message ----- From: "P.J.
