Janice Friel In a message dated 10/22/2008 7:16:33 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Can anyone claim a William and Dora Reilly (in Philadelphia with Irish and English connections)? Their son William was buried with my family in 1899 in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, USA), but I have not found any connection between the families -- not even proximity or occupation, so I doubt these were neighbors or co-workers, though anything is possible. 1899 Philadelphia Death Cert (#22892) of William Reilly (Wm B. Riley on the cert.) says: white, male, 4 weeks old, died April 3rd 1899 of convulsions, Thomas Dugan, Coroner, per Wolf born Phila., father William K. Riley, mother Dora Riley 33rd Ward, 818 Willard St. buried April 5th 1899, New Cathedral (Roman Catholic) Cemetery Phil J. Donahue, undertaker, Lehigh and Kensington Ave. 1900 census, 2535 Lee St., Philadelphia, Ward 19, ED 405 (sheet 2A, page 148, dwelling 24, family 25) Reilly, Wm. K., head, white, male, b. June 1872, 27, married 3 yrs, born England, parents born England, emi. 1880, in US 20 yrs., first papers, butcher, 0 months unemployed, can read / write / speak English, rents, home (not farm) -----, Dora, wife, white, female, b. Oct. 1875, 24, married 3 yrs., 2 children born, 1 living, born PA, parents born Ireland, can read / write / speak English -----, Joseph A., son, white, male, b. Nov. 1897, 2, single, b. PA, f. b. Eng., m. b. PA Baby William was buried with my Bridget (McGarvey) Royle (d. 1897, so d. before baby William Reilly) and two of her daughters (who pre- deceased their mother). Bridget McGarvey was born c. 1862 in Co. Donegal, Ireland -- so could be related to Dora's parents who were reportedly born in Ireland. There are no known Doras in my tree, however. I know only that Bridget had a sister Catherine (married a McGee) and a brother John (married twice, no known children), both of whom also emigrated. I know nothing of any of the family who may have stayed in Donegal and haven't yet figured out where in Donegal they came from. Bridget McGarvey married Thomas Royle, who was born c. 1861 in Lancashire (Salford area), England -- so could be a relation of the father William Reilly who was born in England. My English Royles, however, have shown no connection with any Reillys (or any other Irish names), and were not Catholic (which is not to say that none of their family was, but I've seen no sign of it). If anyone recognizes these Reillys and knows of a McGarvey or Royle connection, please let me know. Otherwise, I hope this at least helps someone who's researching William and Dora.
