I have a comprehensive list of school rollbooks and registers for Donegal online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/school.htm Listed are what I have online as well as the schools hels at the County Archives Lifford, National Archives Dublin and those on LDS microfilm (the last two with references) I was at the County Archives in Lifford in June/July this year - its a small office with three staff - not all registers/records are held on site, so you have to book ahead and let them know what you are interested in, so they can have them there for you (takes a day or two sometimes to get them to the Archives) The books are as they were deposited and some I saw weren't in the best condition, but there is not the money or resources at this time to microfilm them - they are well looked after though and will not get any worse than they are. You need to go to the Archives yourself and view the registers - there's no staff to copy anything as large as a register for you. An alternative is to pay a researcher to go and do that for you............or if you know someone in Donegal, send them along in your stead. What they need is people who are interested in the schools to do what I do - film or record in some way, the content of the registers, then submit a copy to them for their records. On my visit I photographed the pages of a number of registers (with my helpful side-kick Connie and not so helpful son Liam, dozing at the table or popping bubble wrap the staff had given him). Now I'm home, I will be putting the images onto cd for them and including an index for each of the pupils in the rollbook/register with page numbers. That way at least, the old registers won't have to be handled too much............I cringed when handling one - the spine creaked and cracked as I turned the pages!! Hope that helps!
