The name is not that common in Donegal and I think that they would be more numerous in Derry, and perhaps around the border area. Alas, you will need a lot of luck to take even an educated guess as to where he was from as there are few records from that period. One possibility, remote as it may be, is to search for other people of the same name. I do not know where the name Barnabas comes from but it may be Latin for something like Barney (Brian). People were named after relatives in those days so a Barney McCann, for example, in the much latter Tithe List or Griffiths Valuation could give you a clue.
