Hello, This is my first post so it is all new to me and I hope that this email is not too long. I would like to ask if anyone could provide some missing information regarding my Grandmother's family. She married my Grandfather John O'Donnell on April 28th 1897 in Clonmany and her maiden name was Annie McCool. What I have found out so far is the following:- According to the birth record, my grandmother, Annie McCool was born September 28 1868 at 63 Salem St. Boston MA USA and her parents were James McCool and Celia (Her surname is not shown on the Birth Certificate). I have records of other children born to James and Celia McCool. Daniel McCool born January 25 1871 at 91 Salem St Boston MA. He died Aged 1 year 10 months and 27 days on December 18 1872 (Note tombstone shows Dec 19). Edward McCool born January 27 1873 at 21 Morton St Boston MA. He died aged 9 months and 14 days on September 9 1873 (Note 9 months and 14 days equals Nov 9 1873 and this is what is shown on the tombstone. Mary McCool born August 21 1874 at 21 Morton St Boston MA. James died December 23 1874 and at the time was living at 21 Morton St Boston MA. The gravestone of James which was erected by his wife Cecilia McCool. It is located in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. I have a photograph which is a little difficult to read but this is what I can make out:- Erected by Cecilia McCool In memory of her husband James McCool Died Dec 21 1874 Aged 35 years Native of Clonmany Co Donegal Ireland Their children Daniel Died Dec 19 1872 Aged 1 year 11 mths Edward Died Nov 9 1873 Aged 9 mths (The last line is undecipherable) I know from James' death record that his parent's names were Edward and Ann(both from Ireland) so maybe Daniel and Mary were Cecilia's parent's names. I could not find James McCool on the 1860 census for Massachusetts, so it might be likely that he emigrated between 1860 and 1868 unless he emigrated prior to NYC or Canada and lived elsewhere until he found his way to Boston. There was a James McCool, born about 1836, who emigrated on 4 Aug 1856 from Liverpool to NYC on the ship named Harvey Birch but I don't know if this is my James. I cannot find a marriage record in either the USA or in Ireland. I would wager a guess that the family returned to Ireland shortly after the death of James but I do not know when. This would be before the 1878-1960 UK Incoming Passenger List records index in which I was not able to locate the family. I am looking for as much information about my family as possible but specifically:- When and where was James born? When and where was Cecilia (Celia) born? When and where were James and Cecilia married? When and to where they emigrated to the USA. The maiden name of Cecilia. When Cecilia returned to Ireland with my grandmother Annie and her sister Mary and of course any information regarding James' and Cecilia's parents and siblings. The family seem to think that after Cecilia's return to Ireland she lived in Clonmany in a house called "Snowflakes"(Which is still in Clonmany) and married a Mr Doherty. I realise that the Catholic Church records do not start before 1852 but I am hoping that someone has some details. Anyway, I do hope that someone is able to help and look forward to receiving any information.
Hello Kevin. I have no knowledge of the geographical area or of any of the families. I googled for CLONMANY and obtained a lot of seemingly very interesting results. You might like to try that search too. One of the results was here: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/d/e/v/Daniel-J-Devlin/FILE/0031page.html Clonmany marriages, transcribed by a very kind person. I cannot find your people there, but there are several Cecilys and at least one Celia. Perhaps there might be connections between some of those forenames. Several McCOOL and COOL marriages amongst them all for you. Also interesting to see COYLE nearby too -- my guess is that that might be another way of writing / pronouncing COOL. I assume that you have searched in the links which are shown at the foot of each posting to this list. I'd be surprised if you don't find something relevant in them. If you have not yet read Boyd GRAY's wonderful little guide to Donegal research, then I strongly suggest that you do so. Here is a link to it, as he has kindly made it freely available to all: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/genbooklet.pdf Be sure to follow his suggestions regarding the Griffiths Valuation of Ireland. HTH. Good Luck.
