Bob, Keep the heid! It was suggested to me that due to Xmas I may not get as many answers as normal, also an email from Bob Hiflyte stated that it was best to join all 4 Donegal lists. Hence my repeat posts to all 4. It is possible that there is someone out there doing the same research as me is it not? As far as the answers I received to my original post are concerned I am very thankful, I apologise if I got my Bob's mixed up. When I stated that I preferred to try and do the research myself I meant that with the links you and Bob had given me I would give it a go. I was not ignoring the information you gave me, why would I? I think you have taken my reply in the wrong manner, it was certainly not meant as a dig at you. It was suggested that I had picked the wrong time for my first post (probably correct) and should re=post in New Year. Thanks John Gibb johnmgibb@blueyonder.co.uk Hi All, This is my first post on the Donegal list. I am researching my wife's family and would appreciate a couple of pointers on where to seek information. I have been using the LDS site on her father's side (he came from Antrim) with some success using the info from there to purchase certs.from Roscommon or PRONI but have hit a brick wall with her mother who comes from Donegal. In the past other members of her family have done some research and even have approximate dates for birth, death & marriages, but they don't have any paperwork to prove it! I would like to purchase certificates but need to be sure if what I have is accurate. I have the following which is mostly oral family history: Margaret (Maggie) came to Scotland at an early age 3 or 4 years. Her parents (both born in Ireland) were Charles O'Donnell (b. abt. 1871 & d. Feb 1949 in Dumbarton, Scotland) and Catherine Davis (b. abt. 1887, d. Oct 1957 in Dumbarton, Scotland); they married 27/01/1916 in St. Eugene RC cathedral, Derry, Ireland. Margaret was born 05/07/1913 in Buncrana, Donegal and she had a sister Jane. Charles O'Donnell's parents were Manus O'Donnell (d. bef. 1902) and Mary??(b.abt. 1843, d. bet. 1901-1911). Catherine Davis's parents were Andrew Davis (d. bef.1902) and Katherine McAvenney (spelling?) (b. abt. 1856, d. aft. 1910). Andrew Davis died after having an accident in Glasgow, story goes that Katherine returned to Ireland with compensation money and bought plot of land to build house on at Burnfoot, Macrabeg, Faun, near Buncrana, Donegal. Obviously some of the spellings of names could be incorrect. I'm looking for any info anyone may have or just point me in the right direction. Sorry, my error, The "Senegalses" is a typing error that should have read, Donegaleire Mailing List, obviously I did not proof my message before hitting the Send button. Nothing has changed since implementing this database many years ago, always is Donegaleire...................and the instructions are the same and you submit via the Donegaleire mailing list. Ed, I have no idea what you are talking about. Sengalese mailing list again don't know what your are talking about, in fact never heard of it. You do not have to change any settings in order to use any RW mailing list other than to make sure that your email accepts Rootsweb mail. The Donegal Researchers database is a "read only" file from my site that you must download first and opened in MS excel or Open office, again you don't need any changes to your computer in order to open the file. Once you download the file you can do whatever you wish with it. The file on my system is a "READ ONLY" file on my system and will not accept your input. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hiflyte/WhatsNew/New.html In order to submit your research names and data you "must submit it to the Donegaleire Mailing List" in order for my system to pickup your submission. The process is semi automated and only works with the Donegaleire list. You may ask why only the Donegaleire List, well it is much easier to deal with one list rather than three and the majority appear to use the Donegaleire list while some belong to all three, makes life easier for me, also ensures that only Donegal researchers are able to submit data (must be a member of the List in order to summit emails to it). Once my email program picks up your email (does this by reading the subject line) the process converts your submission into a format that will be acceptable for MS Excel and inputs it in the master file/database. The file on my website is updated weekly on Fridays with the latest data. All you have to do is submit your data to the Donegaleire mailing list in the format as directed in the instructions --- Comma Separated Valuse "CSV" format as laid out in the instructions. There are a number of examples for your use, you only have to put your insof between the commas, type the subject line and mail it to the Donegaleire list. Have a nice day Bob Cdn. ============ On 07/01/2011 1:38 PM, edd73 wrote: Bob: Why is it so difficult to submit information to the Donegal Lists that you have to have seperate instructions to accept excel format and change my setting ( which I am not willing to do at this time )on my computer just for your list alone. William, Did a bit of searching on your Gill and Duffy surnames. It would appear that your people remained in Ireland for a considerable time before going to LKS unless I have found the wrong families. Let you decide if they are the correct lines in your tree. Map: http://tinyurl.com/2aeup86 Note this surname can be MacGill or McGill My GV data lists 32 Gills in Clonmany Parish The same data base lists 23 Duffys in Clonmany Parish http://tinyurl.com/354pv6l Since GV data was taken in and around your time frame and if the Father owned or rented land, property etc then he would be shown in the GV data. Askabout lists 42 Gill entries but some are the same person with additional land holding etc. There are two Neal Gills listed in Clehagh townland but both entries are in the same plot number. 1 Neal is listed as Gill Neal (James) which would indicate that he is the son of James Gill (not a cut and dry assumption). Have also found: Birth, Clonmany, Gortaran is a townland in Clonmany but unable to link this place to any Griffith's Valuation (GV)data. Probably listed with some other townland. 08 Jan 1856, Gill Biddy, father: Neal, Mother: Dotherty Catherine, Townland Gortaran, 29 Sept 1857, Gill Neal, same as above 18 Mar 1860, Gill Patrick, same as above 19 Jun 1862, Gill Thomas, same as above 17 May 1865, Gill Daniel, same as above 26 Aug 1867, Gill James, same as above 15 Nov 1869, Gill William, same as above 14 Jul 1872, Gill Charles, same as above Marriage: Neal Gill (Gortacarn) & Catherine Doherty, (Gortfall) 10 Jan 1855. Births to the marriage of Gill Neal and Bridget (Brid, Brigid) Duffy, 13 May 1891, Gill Catherine, Father: Neal, Mother: Bridget Duffy, Magheranual Townland, 22 Jul 1893, Gill Neal, same as above 12 Apr 1895, Gill George, same as above 19 Aug 1896, Gill Bridget, same as above 5 Aug 1898, Gill George, No marriage data on Gill/Duffy No birth info on Bridget Duffy If you check the IFHF website you may get some info but remember they charge a few good sum to read their data http://donegal.rootsireland.ie/ Posted to the Donegal Lists as reference. Hello Listers When Patrick Gallagher, my 2 x ggf died in 1867 at Aghatubbrid, the informant was Hannah Gallagher whom I take to be his daughter (no proof found). His death registration district is Dristernan. In 1868 I have a record of a marriage of Hannah GALLAGHER to Michael FAULKINER (but no source!). Then in the next 20 years, I have 11 children born to the couple, all of them being baptised in St Mary's Culdaff. The birth registration district was 'Inishowen', with the possible death at a young age of Rose Ann as another child was named Rose a few years later. I would be interested in finding a reference number for Hannah and Michael's marriage - and hopefully a location. I'd also like to find them on the 1901 and 1911 Censuses. I've tried online but so far to no avail. Is anyone 'out there' connected to this family please? Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
