I'm on record for the families of Manus McFadden, Dunfanaghy........1798 to 1898. And that of Samuel McCloskey 1834-1894. William, Go to Scotlandpeoples.org and do a search. Official BMD/Gensite for Scotland. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ Searches are free but you pay for the actual data. It is free to register you only have to pay when you want to look at the images and results. It is probably the best place to obtain positive data on the net since they hold the official registers etc for all of Scotland. I did a check and found a reference for one (1) Neal Gill/Duffy/1876/1876/RC but did not actually see the results it takes, my credits are locked in since they expired after 90 days, they are still there but I have to top up my account to use them, you will see when you read the info on the site. John: as you are on comcast I am unable to reply to you privately, so I beg the indulgence of the list for this off-topic reply to your posting. I feel so sad for you, in reading that you have lost your home through mortgage foreclosure due to your unemployment for such a long time. If such a thing were to happen to me, I know that I should feel totally devastated, and would have no incentive to make a fresh start. You are doing very well in that situation to be taking up your genealogical researches again. I hope that in doing so, not only might you find more of your families, but that it might also be therapeutic for you (I suffer from depression, so I appreciate the value of therapeutic pursuits); and hopefully along the way you might also find new friends worldwide. Of course nothing that I say could make any inroads into the losses that you have suffered -- not only financial, but also emotional; but I do hope that just knowing that someone else is moved by your plight and feels solidarity with you, might help a little. The very best wishes to you, and may 2011 be the start of things looking up for you. Hello Boyd. I wrote privately to John when he made his first posting, suggesting that as it was Xmas, a lot of OTHER people who MIGHT have been interested in his posting, might not have seen it; and therefore I suggested that after the holiday period he might find it helpful to post again. I cannot recall now whether I wrote that to him before or after you and Bob had provided your -- as always -- valuable and helpful advice to him. BUT, what I had in my head when I suggested that to him, Boyd; was NOT meant as any slight to what either or both of you had posted; but INSTEAD, that by re-posting he might find other listers who are researching the same family SURNAMES, who might be interested and might therefore reply to him. I am sorry that my advice to him has started this level of the discussion; but I think that in re-posting as he has done, he is actually advertising his interest in making contact with others on the list or elsewhere who might be researching the same family lines or surnames, or have local knowledge or information about them to share with him. My apologies to you and the list, and to John, for having instigated a not-so-nice line of messages; which was certainly not my intention; and which I honestly believe was not John's intention either. Whilst I am here, I wish a slightly late Happy New Year to all listers. Ray in oz > boydgray26@utvinternet.com wrote: > > We have given you all you need, John. Good morning, Ray, John and Listers, Please accept my apologies for seeming more than a little tetchy in my second reply to John. It has all been a bit of a misunderstanding and thank you, Ray, for taking the time to explain it. The timing of your off-list reply to John is not that important. Before or after, John is probably new to Lists and would have taken your advice notwithstanding the replies Bob and I had already made. He would not have appreciated that we are often frustrated by giving help that is not acted upon by those who like to ask questions but not then do the work. I think we all understand each other now. I hope that John and others reading this will feel able to continue to continue to ask questions as their research progresses. And, while I am here, I hope that you, Ray, are safe and not too badly affected by the dreadful floods devastating your eastern seaboard and are therefore able to enjoy the New Year as well as we are here in Donegal, exceptional snow notwithstanding! Janice, You can view the valuation map on the Askabout website. http://tinyurl.com/4nojsxu I have attached a copy of the map that Janice will receive but those on Rootsweb will not get it since attachments are not allowed on the Rootsweb website. There's another way to print out the map, using the Prt Scr function. Look on the upper rows of your computer keyboard for a key with Prt Scr. It'll probably be a double function with something underneath it. Mine has Prt Scr over SysRq. Pull up the map on your computer screen, then hit Shift and Prt Scr at the same time. This will save the image to clipboard. Next, pull up an image processing softward package. Microsoft Paint will work, and there are others. Hit Ctrl and V at the same time, and the image of your map will appear on Microsoft Paint. You can later the image, crop off the unnecessary stuff, and save the image. Hope this is helpful! -- Dan M. -------------------- Hello Listers I've just found on an Internet map the name 'Terrawee'. The only other place I've seen it is on my ggf's Death Certificate as the place of his birth. I asked about it when in Culdaff many years ago, and was told it is down by the bridge' but that didn't help any! The on-line map won't save and won't print - just the surrounding text.

And you DID ignore the info I gave you. Most people comment on the findings and say if they seem right or not. I think what annoys and others like me who try to help on the Lists is how often we do help and all we get in reply is a thanks and then an ignoring of the data instead of looking at it and commenting and asking questions and perhaps seeing where to go next. And btw, my name is BOYD. Apologies if I sound like I am losing my heid but it sort of happens more often than we would like and I am replying on list so that others be warned!!! Tee hee. I hope you find other researchers. Bob, Keep the heid! It was suggested to me that due to Xmas I may not get as many answers as normal, also an email from Bob Hiflyte stated that it was best to join all 4 Donegal lists. Hence my repeat posts to all 4. It is possible that there is someone out there doing the same research as me is it not? As far as the answers I received to my original post are concerned I am very thankful, I apologise if I got my Bob's mixed up. When I stated that I preferred to try and do the research myself I meant that with the links you and Bob had given me I would give it a go. I was not ignoring the information you gave me, why would I? I think you have taken my reply in the wrong manner, it was certainly not meant as a dig at you. John, I replied to your original post in considerable detail almost immediately, as did Bob Hiflyte. I gave you the location of one of your four families, the Davis family, which I suggested you use as a template for finding the others. You confused the two of us and replied to my posting with a "Dear Bob", thanking me for the websites which I gave you, making no comment on the Davis family which I found for you and declaring, "I prefer to try and do the research myself". You also told Bob in a separate posting that you would use the websites which he gave you. I am at a loss to know how much more help you could have been given in this "wrong time" and even more so as to what more you would like us to do for you since you ignored what I gave you because you want to do it yourself and Bob and I have already given you all the best websites. Let me repeat, there is a very useful guide to basic Donegal genealogy at Lindel Buckley's website which you can use as well as anyone else to do your Donegal genealogy for yourself: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/genbookletE3.pdf Boyd Gray http://familytrees.genopro.com/boydgray26/Boyd/default.htm http://www.westulstergenealogy.com/ http://preview.tinyurl.com/yk7gckr -----Original Message----- From: donegaleire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:donegaleire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Gibb Sent: 09 January 2011 16:23 To: DONEGALEIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [DONEGALEIRE] FW: 1st Post - again!! Hi All, I first posted just before Christmas and received a couple of replies, thanks again to those who did. It was suggested that I had picked the wrong time for my first post (probably correct) and should re=post in New Year. Thanks John Gibb johnmgibb@blueyonder.co.uk Hi All, This is my first post on the Donegal list. I am researching my wife's family and would appreciate a couple of pointers on where to seek information. I have been using the LDS site on her father's side (he came from Antrim) with some success using the info from there to purchase certs.from Roscommon or PRONI but have hit a brick wall with her mother who comes from Donegal. In the past other members of her family have done some research and even have approximate dates for birth, death & marriages, but they don't have any paperwork to prove it! I would like to purchase certificates but need to be sure if what I have is accurate. I have the following which is mostly oral family history: Margaret (Maggie) came to Scotland at an early age 3 or 4 years. Her parents (both born in Ireland) were Charles O'Donnell (b. abt. 1871 & d. Feb 1949 in Dumbarton, Scotland) and Catherine Davis (b. abt. 1887, d. Oct 1957 in Dumbarton, Scotland); they married 27/01/1916 in St. Eugene RC cathedral, Derry, Ireland. Margaret was born 05/07/1913 in Buncrana, Donegal and she had a sister Jane. Charles O'Donnell's parents were Manus O'Donnell (d. bef. 1902) and Mary??(b.abt. 1843, d. bet. 1901-1911). Catherine Davis's parents were Andrew Davis (d. bef.1902) and Katherine McAvenney (spelling?) (b. abt. 1856, d. aft. 1910). Andrew Davis died after having an accident in Glasgow, story goes that Katherine returned to Ireland with compensation money and bought plot of land to build house on at Burnfoot, Macrabeg, Faun, near Buncrana, Donegal. Obviously some of the spellings of names could be incorrect. I'm looking for any info anyone may have or just point me in the right direction.
