From: robertdoragh@hotmail.com To: donegaleire@rootsweb.com Subject: From Pat Tedder McCLAY HARRON Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2011 13:49:28 +0000 Hello All, I'm forwarding this to the list, Rob Doragh From: patedder@brilla.freeserve.co.uk Subject: RE: [DONEGALEIRE] Dont give up Help please The family I am looking for is MCCLAY and in particular JOSEPH born c1814 according to death cert. died 1867 and his wife who was ELIZABETH HARRON from BALLINKILLEW died 1869. Found the marriage in the church records in Ballintra. Joseph and Elizabeth married in October 1844, although he is listed a MCCLEA. The witnesses were Hooey and McClay who are both resident in Trumman East. Found Joseph on the GV as living in Trumman East, Laghy, Donegal. Can trace the family this way its going back thats the problem. There are several MCCLAYS listed in Trumman East so I feel sure that they must be related along the line somewhere can tie some of the others together but Joseph remains out in the cold. Thomas Connolly was the landlord and I hoped that there would be old leases or reference to tenants amonst his papers which are held at both Proni and in Dublin.
Hi I have read with interest these e-mails as I seem to have been chasing my tail for years. I have managed totrace both maternal and paternal sides of the family back to c1840 and then I hit the brickwall. My family comes from Trumman East, Laghy, co. Donegal Tried all the obvious Parish records, LDS, have purchased various bdm's, got the Drumhomne graveyard book, GV. There are only main landlords in the Tithe applotment books. Had assistance from Margaret Grahem re Laghy church records. looking for suggestions on the not so obvious. The Landlord was Thomas Connelly and I understand that there are papers at Proni has anyone looked at these papers or done this sort of research ? would it be better to get a professional or go to Proni oneself? or should it be Dublin. Help please Many thanks Pat
Decided to take Rob's advice and have another go, and lo and behold, found the death registration for my gg grandfather, which I did not think even existed. Seems previously, I was making the mistake of looking in the parish instead of the PLU. Pays to read the instructions! Still no record of his son's marriage in 1871 in the same PLU, so guess those did not make it to the registrar's office, although I have seen the record in the actual parish register. "If at once you don't succeed, try and try again" as the old saying goes. Thanks be to both Rob and Ray! Hi I've just received an E Mail from a McCONIGLEY in the Fanad area about my McGONIGAL name. We both have a COYLE in our maternal line. I seem to remember reading somewhere that McGonigal and McConigley had common origins, probably from the Gaelic MacCONGHAIL. I've asked him about getting a YDNA test done to see if there is a connection,I know that YDNA is preferable with persons with the same surname, but if the two names are connected somewhere in the past..like I have in NIALL of the NINE HOSTAGES..it may prove it. Anyone done any research or YDNA tests in the McCONIGLEY line ?..I've checked on Family Tree DNA but no McConigley. Thanks Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada.
Be sure and check the file for new updates, maybe someone has added a new surname that you are looking for. -------------------------------------------------- Donegal Members, 4 Feb 2011 To review the instructions for submitting your data visit: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hiflyte/WhatsNew/New.html Click on "Instruction for Submitting Input http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hiflyte/WhatsNew/New.html You can't input your own data into the DB but must submit your input via the Donegaleire Mailing List. I thought the name looked familiar! Craigstown is in Magheradrumman and I have the townland map shoing it, online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/magheradrummandonagh.jpg That part of Magheradrumman was Farren's land - in 1857 there were the two Farren households there - John and Daniel Farren's house and land, next to the schoolhouse. Edward was from Magheramore, which is in Churchlands Quarter, just to the west of Magheradrumman.................I have a map showing that, which I'll get online soon. Hope that helps! All the best, Lindel
Sorry, I got my townlands mixed up in the previous post. Ballincrick is on the Fanad peninsula, not Inishowen. There is also a Craigstown near Carndonagh. P.J. ----- Original Message ----- From: "P. Hello Allyssa, Dave may well be correct. Look for Magheradrumman on Google Maps and you will see a place called "Ballincrick and Ballynabrocky". 'Ballincrick' is almost certainly 'Baile na Carraig', or 'Baile na Carraige', meaning the townland of the rock or rocks. I have seen another townland called 'Baile na Carraige' (in Tullaghobegley) translated to 'Craigstown' and you could easily mistake that pronunciation for 'Creekstown'. Therefore, my guess is that your 'Creekstown' is in fact 'Ballincrick' in Inishowen. Another clue comes from the Farren name, which is an Inishowen surname. Hi Allyssa My suggestion is that you should look in Donegal for the townland of "Craigstown" (sometimes "Craigtown"). Try pronouncing Craigstown with a Donegal accent (with a very short "ai"), in the presence of someone unfamiliar with an Irish accent. I presume you have seen the various documents on Ancestry.com for your Daniel McGonagle -- Census 1910 and 1920, marriage, also immigration schedule? There are some entries for Edward McGonagle and Ellen McGonagle (the names of his parents) in the Wills Calendar at PRONI, however none seem to fit your lad. Have you tried looking at the Irish census for 1901? Or are there just too many Daniel McGonagle's? Best of luck in your research. Well, Allyssa, I think I have gotten it all together now - mostly with Dave's help. Firstly, he had suggested Craigstown/Craigtown. I'll confess to having made that my first choice also.....when I misread the townland names as Craigstown. I didn't find any place where Craigstown was used as an alternative to Craigtown, so I changed gears. (My bad [gr]). I was thinking of the pronunciation, too, but didn't follow up. Then Dave found Magheradrumman (Glencannon). There are 3 Magheradrumman townlands in Co. Donegal, but the one we want is in the Glencannon River valley, south of Carndonagh in Inishowen - in Donagh civil parish. The best part is that this Magheradrumman is huge - over 1900 acres - and there are local names for various parts of the townland. Craigtown is one of them. It occupies the northern part of the townland and is less than 2 miles SE of Carndonagh town. There is a school of some sort in Craigtown. It seems that "Creektown" could have been how the placename sounded to the scribe.
