    2. Clare & Dick Brown
    3. Janice I have sent for many records from GRO. I asked them about certificates and they said the cost of a full certificate is 10 euros, and a photocopy is 6 euros. I filled in applications for birth, marriage and death that I downloaded from their site http://www.groireland.ie/about_us.htm And sent them in with cash ,(I insured the mail)requesting photocopies. They may be allowing charge cards now-should be on their site. England GRO does and it works. Place of birth, date, name, father's name and dwelling place, name and surname of mother, profession of father, and informant. Date and place of death, name and surname, condition, age, profession, cause of death, informant. When married, names and surnames, ages, conditions, professions, residences, fathers' names and surnames. It was highly satisfactory. Good luck! 1. Re: [DONEGALEIRE] [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Marriage and death certificates
    2. Janice, When ordering the certs from the GRO in Roscommon, always order the one described under Note 2 = a photocopy at €6. This will be exactoy that, a photocopy of the original and therefore with all the information of the original Not only that, but if you have the Year, Registration District, Volume and Page number, as is usually the case if you have found the record at the LDS website, then you can send just €4 and write on the form, "No search needed, cost therefore €4 each." An Irish Death Cert will NOT usually give either parent. The only other person named is the person who was Present at Death and who registered the death. Sometimes this person's relationship to the deceased is given but usually, it is not. It also gives the presumed age of the person and the cause of death along with the residence (townland) of the deceased and the person who notified the death. An Irish Marriage Cert will have the names of both fathers but neither mother. Sometimes the ages of the couple are given but usually just the fact that they were over 21 - written as "Full". It also gives the residences of the bride and groom (but not their fathers), their marital status, the occupations of both parties plus their fathers and also the names of the witnesses but no indication as to who they are. It also tells you where they were married and therefore their religion. Clearly, each has its advantages. 1. Re: [DONEGALEIRE] Tithe Books
    2. Janice, The Tithe Applotment Books are just a list of who held (leased) the land so that they could be charged tithes for the church. Therefore, like any other type of land holding, there is no law against anyone under 21 holding land. However, it is much more likely to be someone over 21, who has moved out of home and who has married and leased their own farm, or small garden. And of course, that person could also be any age up to 80s. 2. Hello Janice. I noticed that in your recent e-mail you mentioned a Perambulation Book, 1855 which contained the name, among others, of a 'Thomas Hagerty'. My 'ancients' are Haggerty's from someplace in Co Donegal, just where in Co Donegal, I dont know. My Peter Haggerty & wife Nancy McGuire as a couple of kids, & along with his mother, Mary, ~1825, came to New Brunswick Canada & thence, finally in 1830, to northern ME, Houlton area. I , for many years, have been unsucessful in finding any record of them in Canada or Ireland. Would your Perambulation Book, what ever it is, be of any help to me in this matter ; if so, how do I get ahold of one? Many thanks ...... 1. Re: [DONEGALEIRE] McGONIGAL , McGONIGAL
    2. Hi Frank, Lagboy, or Legboy, as it appears to be on the modern OS Map, is in the townland of Ballymagahy Mountain, Ballymagahy North or Ballymagahy South. Not sure which but a quick search of the Failteromhat GV for Clondavaddog Parish shows NO McGonigals/McGonigles and NO Coningleys either in the entire parish. However, there ARE people called McConigly and McCunnigle, which as far as I am concerned, is the same name as McGonigle. And if you anglicise it you end up with Coningley. There are no similar names in any of the Ballymagaheys but there are the following: Mc Conigly Andrew Faltybanes Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Conigly Grace Balloor Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Conigly Henry Faltybanes Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Conigly John Balloor Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Conigly John Faltybanes Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Conigly Patrick Balloor Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Conigly Patrick Glinsk Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Cunnigle Charles Magheradrumman Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Cunnigle Dominick Fallaneas Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Cunnigle Francis Ballincrick and Ballynabrocky Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Cunnigle Francis Cooladerry Mountain Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Cunnigle John Kinnalough Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Cunnigle John Rinmore Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Cunnigle Patrick Magheradrumman Clondavaddog Donegal Mc Cunnigle Thomas Cooladerry Mountain Clondavaddog Donegal I am sure if you use Bob Hilchey's maps you will find that some of these townlands is only a schugh away from the Ballymagaheys. No McMenemins in Clondavaddog either; the closest are: Minahan John Ballynalost Clondavaddog Donegal Minahan John Kinnalough Clondavaddog Donegal Minahan Owen Tullynadall Clondavaddog Donegal Minnan James Laddan Clondavaddog Donegal Minnan John Laddan Clondavaddog Donegal Frank, if you want to send me the Reg Card off-List, I am happy to have a wee duke at it to see if I can make it out. 3. Frank, McGonigal, McGonigle, McConigly, McCunnigle . Did a check of the BIVRI2 data for your surnames in the area mentioned, no luck. As you know it is only a small sampling of what the LDS hold. You can see what names are living in the area via the GV data on my website, which are linked to "Valuation of Tennements" pages by clicking the right hand column link. Also checked the LDS site for the names but none match, maybe a look at the FHC Index files for 1885 time frame would produce results, you should have all these films in-house at the local branch -- (assuming) Hope the weather is better in the TO area than what we are having out here in AB, cold, rain and they even had snow up in the North west corner Global warming is sure affecting us all. 3. Hello Boyd, What a strange find! I suggest that you contact the Central Library in Letterkenny. On their website, http://www.donegallibrary.ie/memory/defaultfhistory.htm, under the heading “Griffith’s Primary Valuation” is the following comment: “Although the publication dates for County Donegal are stated to be 1857-58, there is strong evidence to suggest that the valuation was carried out up to a decade earlier. It is known, for instance, that some persons listed as being present in 1857-58 had died in the Famine.” I am not sure what evidence they have for this assertion, but what they have may throw some light on your current conundrum! Their e-mail is central@donegallibrary.ie. If you discover something of interest, could you share it with us? By the way, there is a Richard Scott listed in the Valuation, renting 80 acres of land in the nearby townland of Dromore, in Inver. Hope this helps! Best wishes Ben http://www.movillerecords.com/ P.s –I can only access the library website using Internet Explorer. Neither Chrome nor Firefox appear to work, but perhaps that’s my settings.
