Cannot agree with that, Lindel!! First, there were almost NO CofI people to rent the land to in the Laggan Valley. They were all Catholic and Presbyterian. That is why 10 out of 12 of the Vestrymen at Taughboyne Parish Church were Presbyterians! Second, this land is top class arable land. You are not going to run sheep or deer on it. The money will be made from crops and beef and dairy cattle. And the people who will do the labouring over the crops and the cattle will be Catholic and Presbyterian. No, it is really just a case of, this is how things were in the 19th century, this is how people thought. They were not monsters, quite the opposite, many of these landlords were actually caring people who did a lot to help the poor when times were really hard with soup kitchens. But, they believed it was better to "reform" them by threatening them with evicition if they did not get their act together and work harder. Btw, it is really good to hear from you again and I hope you are feeling well. That sounds like a great idea - I'll add the info to the Clonleigh pages in the morning! As for Rays very good observation "What I cannot understand though, is that if he was so eager to kick out tenants, then how was he expecting to obtain income from the properties?" I may be able to answer this. These 'observations' were made at a time when the native Irish tenants, the Roman Catholic and Presbyterian tenants were third class citizens - the rights to own or inherit land wasn't open to them and the education of their children was taking place in the doorways of chapels or in houses - worship was generally undertaken in secrecy - and I know that I have read somewhere that the landlords at that time were taxed a higher amount on these kinds of tenants (as opposed to Church of Ireland/Established church people). It was more profitable for them to run sheep, cattle or deer than have these poor people as tenants. I can't for the life of me remember where I read that, as I've read sooooo much over the years, but I do know I did read it somewhere. Someone might have a better answer to this but in the morning, I will see if I can find the reference. Anyway, thanks so much for your post Boyd!! Hi Ray (and LIsters!!), I think the context is simply that this is how things were in the 19th century and we must try not to look at the past through 21st century "liberal" eyes. It always makes me feel slightly uncomfortable when Irish people blame the English for being vehemently anti-Irish over the 1847 potato famine. Yes, I am sure there was an element of "oh, it doesn't matter as it's just the Irish complaining again" but the bigger driving force at the time was the doctrine of Laissez Faire which had produced the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act which in turn created the hated and feared workhouses where English people were incarcerated. And we should not forget, the people who passed these laws, the Whigs or Liberal Party, genuinely believed they were helping the feckless poor!! They were the reformers! And in some ways, these people were right. In the same period, another Mr. Stewart, James Stewart, who was the Marquis of Abercorn, who owned much of the next door parishes of Taughboyne and Raphoe, wrote many letters to his Land Agent, also called James Stewart, urging him to force people into abandoning the rundale system as it was so unproductive. In order to do this, it meant forcing people to give up leases and combining the small plots into bigger farms. His success with this policy, along with the good quality of the land of the Laggan Valley, helped to avoid the worst excesses of the Great Famine in East Donegal. As to this document, I suspect that Stewart had far less success than he hoped for when he recommended that these poor folk were thrown out and their cabins pulled down. The townland of Portinure is still owned by John Throne, the direct ancestor of the John Throne recommended for eviction here. Incidentally, the current John Throne wrote "The Donegal Woman", a harrowing account of women taken from hiring fairs in Strabane and badly abused in the early 20th century. This, sadly, was the way things were. Thanks for providing this detail to us. Oh what a 'cold' document it is. Mr Stewart sounds like a lawyer! (tee hee). I could see many people emigrating if they could, just to get away from overlords with such 'attitude'. What I cannot understand though, is that if he was so eager to kick out tenants, then how was he expecting to obtain income from the properties? There must be an historical context here which I am missing; or else there were just lots of others who were seemingly willing to take over leases etc. A very socially revealing document. Am I being stupid or............. The internet is full of our ancestors faces - just click my link below. Like many people, I have dozens of photographs of ancestors born in Ireland. Or do you not want people born in Ireland and then died in Ireland? Donegal List Members, A call was put out to a few Irish lists for Ancestor photos to put in the IGP Archives this month. I am repeating that request to our Lists. We received a few so far, if you have one or more to share (assuming you know the county) you can use our Photo uploader to add them. We are about preserving our ancestors faces as well as their names. http://www.genrecords.org/irfiles/photos.html Example: http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/longford/photos.htm The IGP Archives has a lot of interesting data in the files, so take a look, maybe your lost person is resting there. If you would like to contribute a file or such for others to utilize, then the IGPA is a good place to archive such data. Thanks Bob CDN IGPA Donegal/Laois file manager. ------------------------------------
Hi, I am looking for information that anyone has regarding two individuals (or their families) who were married (civil) in Killybegs on November 2, 1880. 1. James John McMonagle (McMonigal) born ~ December of 1859. 2. Winifred (Winnie) McGinnis born ~ May of 1853. The Civil marriage record states that James was a Farmer from Coolnagoppig (which I am interpreting to be Culnagoppoge in Fintragh). His father is listed as John McMonagle, a farmer. The record also states that Winifred was also from Coolnagoppig. Her father is listed as Owen McGinnis, a farmer. The witnesses were Charles McGinness and Grace McGinnis. James and Winifred McMonigal then immigrated to Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA within the next 1-2 years. There were/are a number of McMonigal's in the Saint Paul area who all are from the same general area in Donegal, who identify themselves as being from "Killybegs" or "Kilcar". Thanks in advance for any help provided, Meg and Kevin in Minnesota

Good suggestion Ray. Many years ago I checked the New York Times and found the arrival of the ship of my GG Grandparents from Donegal in 1852. I learned that they traveled in the 2nd cabin. There were also some interesting details, such as seeing icebergs. I found the microfilm of the NY Times at the library of a rather small college, so it's probably available many places. Correction on the SIMPSON entry, the parents wed in 1850, not 1859 as I keyed in the recent post ..... Meg Greenwood --------------------------------------------------------
Was doing a lookup in 1855 Births in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland a few days ago and saw a few mentions of Donegal folk in the information given to the Registrar. 1855 was the first year of mandatory Civil Registration, more questions were asked that year than any other since. In 1856, the amount of questions asked was almost cut in half. Since there is so much information, the FHC near my home has all Births, Marriages and Deaths for 1855 covering all 901 parishes in Scotland. Out of over 800 Birth entries in Kilmarnock, here are 2 Registrations mentioning Donegal as the birthplace of a parent. 'ms' is maiden surname 1855 Births, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland entry # 492 SIMPSON, John, born 1 Aug, 11:45PM at Grange Street, Kilmarnock to Alexander SIMPSON, Carpet Weaver, 27y born County Donegal, Ireland and Mary SIMPSON ms BARNES, this was her 2nd child, 31y born Kilmarnock. The parents wed 1859 in Kilmarnock, they had 1 boy living at this time. Informant was the father, Alexander SIMPSON. 1855 Births, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland entry # 674 COPELAND, Mary born 17 Oct, 2:30pm at Fox? Street, Kilmarnock to John COPELAND, Stone Mason, 29y born Glenluce [Wigtownshire, Scotland] and Margaret COPELAND ms KERR, this was her 2nd child, 26y born County Donegal, Ireland.
