I just found this on another message board for Ireland: I learned of these maps courtesy of Tara, whose e-newsletter ResearchBuzz (now sent infrequently, formerly just about daily) had this info on 8/17 (today): "A new digital atlas is available to trace population movement during Ireland famine.??Two new digitized atlases show the levels of emigration during the Great Famine, right up until the rise of the Celtic Tiger in 2002, as well as an analysis of Ireland?s population change.? http://www.irishcentral.com/news/Trace-Irish-Famine-population-with-new-digital-atlas-126827108.html

Just wondering if anyone researching Brown's in the area commonly known as Letterhillue or other variant spelling. (Kilteevoge Parish). I have two death certs here and I think they are my ggg grandparents but not sure. The certs I have are for James Brown, married, died 16th Sep 1871 in Stroangarrow, aged 94 and the informant was Patrick Brown, relationship not mentioned. Also Isabella Brown, widow, died 19th Jun 1877 in Stroangarrow aged 83. Informant was also Patrick Brown and again relationship not mentioned. What I know is that the land held by James Browne passed to my great great grandfather John Browne (1828-1908) in 1877, and from there to Patrick McGinty (originally from Gortiness who married Mary Brown). And from then to the Given family and later to the Forestry. The thing is how likely are James Brown (1777-1871) and John (1828-1908) to be father and son. I also have a death cert for Patrick, the informant for James and Isabella, he died 21st May 1888 aged 71 (so c 1816-1888), informant was his son James. I don't want to be assuming here but I think John 1828-1908 and Patrick 1816-1888 were brothers so was hoping that someone else might have a connection somewhere to prove/disprove things. In case it is of help, Letterhillue/Letterhillew and several other variant spellings is an 'area' covers a few townlands, but not sure which. Another name my dad mentioned was Reelin. A more general name for the area is Glenfin or Cloghan. When I first discovered I had a John Brown, steered away from him like a barge pole as the name is so common, but....if that James is mine....Anyway just wondering if anyone has Brown/Brownes from the area. Thanks for your interest in reading this, Bernie.

Hi Boyd and LISTERS! That sounds like a great idea - I'll add the info to the Clonleigh pages in the morning! As for Rays very good observation "What I cannot understand though, is that if he was so eager to kick out tenants, then how was he expecting to obtain income from the properties?" I may be able to answer this. These 'observations' were made at a time when the native Irish tenants, the Roman Catholic and Presbyterian tenants were third class citizens - the rights to own or inherit land wasn't open to them and the education of their children was taking place in the doorways of chapels or in houses - worship was generally undertaken in secrecy - and I know that I have read somewhere that the landlords at that time were taxed a higher amount on these kinds of tenants (as opposed to Church of Ireland/Established church people). It was more profitable for them to run sheep, cattle or deer than have these poor people as tenants. I can't for the life of me remember where I read that, as I've read sooooo much over the years, but I do know I did read it somewhere. Someone might have a better answer to this but in the morning, I will see if I can find the reference. Anyway, thanks so much for your post Boyd!! Hello Boyd. Thanks for providing this detail to us. Oh what a 'cold' document it is. Mr Stewart sounds like a lawyer! (tee hee). I could see many people emigrating if they could, just to get away from overlords with such 'attitude'. What I cannot understand though, is that if he was so eager to kick out tenants, then how was he expecting to obtain income from the properties? There must be an historical context here which I am missing; or else there were just lots of others who were seemingly willing to take over leases etc. A very socially revealing document. Thanks for sharing it. Ray in oz ((hmmm?? were you trying to call us "Lobsters"? -- tee hee. (That is what most of us use here in oz for what many others call crayfish, I think.); or was it "Losers"? (tee hee some more) Sorry, I must be in a mischievous mood. )) ----- Original Message ----- From: <boydgray26@utvinternet.com> > Losters, > > The data below is copied from PRONI's ecatalogue and all these places are > in > Clonleigh Parish.
